Pros

Decent work life balance. Market-rate salary. Free lunch. I really can't think of anything else positive to say. I liked the people I worked with (not for), but most of them have been laid off.

Cons

Where to begin? For one, the Glassdoor ratings are wrong because StyleSeat told its employees to write 5 star reviews to help recruiting. The company is collapsing because of the poor leadership of cofounders Dan Levine and Melody McCloskey. Almost half the company (disclosure: including me) was laid off last week. They simply do not have the experience to run a successful company nor, apparently, do they have the ability to learn how to. I didn't interact much with Melody, but it was hard to watch her get interviewed by top news organizations and win tech awards when she is running her company into the ground. It was hard for me to believe anything she said because what she said often didn't align with reality or the hard data. Dan was similarly oblivious. He would frequently make spur of the moment decisions and ignores ideas that didn't align with his own. He seemed to make decisions based on what he wanted rather than based on data and feedback provided by our data scientists, VP's and other company leads. The overarching strategy at StyleSeat has been to fire people. People disappear all the time and the company doesn't even mention they're gone half the time. It's clear that they do not value hard work or career growth. You come to work for (not with) the cofounders. I sincerely hope for the sake of future employees that, after StyleSeat goes under, Dan and Melody are never in a position of leadership again. PS: The office is rat and fly infested, and it's located in an alley that may have the most human excrement of any street in SF. I'm seriously not exaggerating.

Making staffing decisions is not always easy and sometimes a company needs to move in a new direction which results in people being let go. I can assure you the decision was not make lightly and our leadership team did the best they could to treat everyone with respect. StyleSeat would not be where we are today without our dedicated and talented employees and we have never lost sigh of that. Thank you for the time you spent with us and we wish you the best of luck with you next move.

Pros

Really great vision Amazing perks You actually have work/life balance

Cons

Silicon Valley is a metrics based world but StyleSeat isn't a metrics based company. The people that actually cared about data were either laid off months ago or left on their own accord (to join some of the top tech companies in the valley.) The CEO, Melody, doesn't understand numbers at all. There were many impressive employees that would hit insane goals and run amazing, strategic tests and engineers were building incredible tools. Seemed like this company was going places! Things seemed to change in an instant. People disappeared one-by-one and no one knew why. We always knew everyone's targets and accomplishments thanks to our Monday Meetings but people were really succeeding would suddenly be laid off. Whispers really started happening when a marketing employees were let-go, seemingly on a whim, and they were all replaced by a VP from a certain company and her team. They were really difficult to work with and we lost faith in Melody as we all saw that they weren't capable and that decision came from her lack of experience in operations. The new VP and her team were also let go after 3 months. My main issue was that it seemed she wasn't interested in the product at all. It was tough because a lot of us put our hearts and soul into something we believed in. She would ask "Since when have we had this feature!?" and no one knew how to answer the question... because the feature had been there all along. A few months ago, about half the company was laid off. We weren't generating revenue and the CEO invested in a new marketing team that had never driven revenue before. The campaigns failed. The money was gone. Now, I hear everyone is looking to leave. I'm so sad because I spent so much time on a vision that could change the world. In the period of 6 months, things changed and the only thing I can point to as to why, is the CEO. She's also NASTY to people and about people. After she hangs up the phone, she'll say really rude things about the person she was talking to. I'm still in shock.

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review and providing what you feel is honest feedback. Running a business can sometimes mean changing direction in order to do what is best for the company. Our priority is to treat all employees with respect and appreciation for their contributions and we know that StyleSeat's continued growth and success depends on our people just as much as the leaders. Thank you for the work you did while you were with us, and we wish you much luck and success in your future endeavors.

The House Of Cards Is Falling Apart

Pros

Some of the people are very smart, free lunches and unlimited vacations.

Cons

In 5 years, the company has raised $40 million and it still does not have a proven revenue model nor does it have a product-market fit with consumers. The CEO is completely unfit and unprepared to lead the business. She has essentially outsourced every function within the company. She is much more interested in Instagram/Snapchat and name dropping. As a result, she has no understanding of the operational details whether they be product, engineering or marketing related. To fill this void, each executive has forged their own path for the company, which ends up being super counter productive because they are not ever aligned. The whole thing is very sad because the concept is outstanding. However, what StyleSeat proves is that entrepreneurial success is only 1% idea and 99% execution. The execution in this case has been horrible. To add fuel to the fire, the office is infected with tons of rats to the point of being unsanitary.
