I worked at Sublime Media in 2013. I've thought a lot about my time there over the years and haven't felt like I deserved for my voice to be heard because it's been so long and these are things I never voiced while I was there, because I was young, naive, and afraid. But I'm going to do this now for my younger self - to finally advocate. I'll also preface by saying a lot can change in 10 years, and that is my genuine hope for this company. This was the worst company I have ever worked for. As a minority, as a woman, and as someone in a support role. It was there that I was initiated into: verbal harassment (my manager greeted my regularly with" What's up, Sl*t" - to which I did not reciprocate), mansplaining: I will never forget the humiliation that ultimately led me to decide to leave when one boss was trying to explain something to me, ended up patronizingly drawing on the whiteboard so I would "get it", and the other boss snickering in the background, assuming I was too stupid/oblivious to understand that I was the butt of a joke. I have more stories and reasons that led to my wanting to leave, but the cherry on top was when I told them I was leaving to pursue a degree in grad school, and the response I received was "Wait, you have a bachelors degree?" Again, I genuinely hope the company grew in values and diversity, but unfortunately for me, I will always remember it as the place where I learned very quickly that there are people in this world who will treat you as poorly as you allow them to.
