Pros

Working with animals and working outdoors.

Cons

This is the worst company I have ever worked for. When I started, the owners seemed very friendly and organized. I was happy to work for a small local business. As I continued working, I realized how dysfunctional and toxic this place was. The owners could barely manage one business then for some reason decided to open a second one. The owners stated multiple times that they would have training sessions with us to help us learn the scheduling systems but that never happened. They promised weekly meetings where we could go over issues and those rarely happened. They would frequently blame us (the managers) for their own shortcomings to our other co-workers. When bringing up issues about the company, the owners would brush us off and not fix any of the issues. I noticed on multiple occasions that my hours seemed off, which I brought up to the owners. They gaslit me into thinking I had worked less than I actually did. I started tracking my own hours and realized that almost every paycheck was coming up short. After talking to other co-workers, they verified that they were having the same issues. The owners frequently praised themselves for being “understanding” and “personable.” When I had a death in the family, they told me I could have as much time off as I needed, yet two days later, they told me I needed to come back to work, no exceptions. All and all, Sugar House Pets hands down is the most toxic places I have ever worked and I would never recommend anyone have their pets seen by them let alone work there. Both owners are hotheads and do not know how to regulate their emotions.

Pros

Good flexibility with your schedule. Sweet animals. Independent workday where you're not too micromanaged. Sweet repeat clients you build a relationship with.

Cons

I caught them underpaying me and after I left I spoke with other ex-employees who also caught them doing so. They handled being called out very poorly and pretty much tried to gaslight me into thinking it was my fault. They also would not give details about how they were distributing tips, and other employees and I noticed that clients' requests to tip extra money to a specific employee never went to the intended employee. They did not reimburse for gas for most of the time I worked for them and when they did implement reimbursement it was extremely minimal. Be aware that you cannot deduct that expense because you're a W2 worker, so you're basically being paid a lot less $ hourly after gas and car expenses. For much of the time I was employed they advertised that all employees were fear free certified, pet first aid certified, and vaccinated, but none of those were true.

Pros

Management was great on working with my strange school schedule, and I was able to pick my hours that I wanted. I got to do what I loved. It was a good experience while it lasted.

Cons

As the business got more busy, I was expected to be available 7 days a week to petsit and dog walk. I did not get personal time on the weekends like I requested many times. As you can imagine, I burned out many times and repeatedly. I would work 8-5 and do after hours pet care from 5-7 (sometimes 8), and then be expected to be in for the night by 10pm. I was only able to do short excursions with the people I cared about and had to turn down many invitations to go to lakes, go camping, or go on day hikes. The owner repeatedly walked over me and I let her, because she was supplying my paycheck, and I didn’t want to create trouble. When I worked there, the owner did not reimburse gas, so I was having to pay for my own gas to get to my walking appointments. I put 40,000 miles on my car in the 2 years I worked there. The thing that bothered me the worst was that the owner constantly would tell me that certain things were going to happen and then they never did. I never took her seriously so when the policies constantly changed, I did not pay attention and then she would get mad at me for not following through. I quit and gave notice, and the owner did not wish me well even though I had done a ton to help her with her business. A week later I was expected to work past my notice date. Obviously I said no and was fired digitally without being called or spoken to first. Before I was fired, the owners retaliated and said they had gotten personal advice to fire me many months ago and had not followed through on it. Very unprofessional and very petty. These two do not know how to run a business.
