Pros

I started working for Swenson Healthcare just over one year ago as a New Graduate Nurse Practitioner. I have been provided the opportunity to learn from some of the best NPs, PAs, and MDs in the field, and in just one year I have been given multiple opportunities for advancement and leadership roles. The leadership team have been incredibly supportive and have worked with me to build a career path as a Nurse Leader and Quality Provider. NPs and PAs are treated as equals and not treated as “mid-level” providers, but as excellent Advanced Practice Clinicians who are allowed to practice at full scope. Great place to work for new and experienced NPs.

Cons

Limited to Post Acute and Long Term Care in Skilled Facilities.

Toxic environment

Pros

There are other places to work where you will have respect and quality of life.

Cons

Toxic environment, brutal treatment of PAs and NPs who anchor the buildings and work >10 hours per day + extra time to complete progress and stabilization notes on the weekends and take overnight call. Midlevels often work without adequate physician oversight, teaching, or support for weeks. New hires are often new grads who lack the experience to know that they are being abused or the jeopardy they are in with scant physician support. Swenson makes unrealistic and unsafe productivity demands and do not consider the time it takes to manage the building to provide a quality facility for the patients, families and nursing staff. You had 3 patients crash? 2 family conferences? Had to coordinate a complex patient's follow up? That's on you. Expect to use more of your personal time to do the right thing. Often the notes by the "productive" midlevels are poor in quality/medical decision making --> copy and paste will be your survival mechanism. Mid levels are penalized if productivity is not met, the number of notes can be a moving target (10, 12, 15 +notes not spelled out in your contract) and the number can be based on how Swenson favors you. Do you complain or express concern about your QOL and the time demands or about patient care safety? Expect a higher quota. If you fail to meet your note quota you can expect phone calls from members of the executive team- bullying, badgering, overt verbal abuse, docking pay. These tactics have all been used on current and former employees to force quota goals. Meanwhile, the executive team grows larger and garners premium salaries at the expense of your quality of life, your sanity, at the risk of jeopardizing your professional license. Bonus structure is basically unattainable even by PAs who are highly experienced and efficient. Do not expect mentoring, do not expect support at your site or sympathy from your higher ups when you are overwhelmed and exhausted. If there is a problem at the building it is your fault, your deficiency. Swenson will not represent your concerns if there is any personnel discord or inefficiency/safety concerns at your building. You will be blamed. More than 1 PA shared that the Owner personally berated and disparaged them when they submitted their letter of resignation. Many have left this company with lingering emotional distress and questioning their career choice.

Pros

I have no pros for this company.

Cons

Company will lure you in with fake smiles, hugs, and promises of work-life balance. They have a very toxic work culture towards NP's and PA's, but yet will expect them to do all the manual labor while the physicians take credit or copy your work. The call expectation is unreasonable. You will be on call every working day evening in addition to a straight 7 days around the clock. Swenson is pompous and treats and speaks to his employees unfairly. He will attempt to drain patients Medicare dollars and doesn't care about the residents. I would not trust Swenson to care for anyone I loved. You will have no work-life balance and forget about having a personal life. It's a highly malignant culture. They cannot keep providers because they keep mistreating and running them off. In 2019, 5 providers quit, including the VP, coder, & recruiter. That ought to tell you something!
