The very definition of a dead end job!
Pros
Most of the employees are nice and easy to get along with. Most of the members are easy to serve. Although there are a few bad apples in each one of those categories but that it is to be expected anywhere you go. The environment was very relaxed. 95% of the time we were on our phones when we didn't have members. The ladies would shop online from their computers. They would have stuff delivered to the credit union that they ordered online. We would have breakfast regularly delivered by Doordash and sometimes we would do lunch or ice cream in the afternoons. Standard office hours of 08:15-05:15 M-T and 08:15-05:45 on Friday's. Very easy job that required very minimal effort.
Cons
Absolutely terrible salaries. Even for more advanced/non entry level positions like Accounting and Branch Manager, etc, the salaries are not only far from what a Bank would offer but even not comparable to what other Credit Union's in the area offer. Tellers had to work at least 1 Saturday a month but potentially 2 depending upon if someone was out on vacation. The benefit offerings were not that great. High deductibles on the "updated" insurance plans. The Credit Union offers employees the opportunity to establish a 401k account but the Credit Union makes no matching contributions to the 401k. The Credit Union uses the very old and outdated system of "years of service" to determine how much time off an employee is awarded. Most companies have done away with the "years of service" model because they realize that all employees not only should have but deserve to have time off that is sufficient to allow them to not constantly live at work. Employees who are with the Credit Union for 4 years or less are only awarded 4 hours of sick and vacation pay for each full pay period worked. This means an employee would need to work for six months straight without taking any time off - even a day - in order to be able to reach enough time off to take a week's vacation. Employees who are with the Credit Union for 90 days or less are not permitted to access PTO or sick time until the 91st day of employment. During the 90 day period employees are only permitted to miss 1 day. Absences more than 1 day require approval and if the absence is due to sickness the employee is required to produce a Doctor's note. Which brings me to my next point....the Doctor's note policy. It is 2023....are you serious? No one asks employees to produce Doctor's notes anymore unless the employee misses three consecutive days in a row or they are going to be out for an extended period of time. It cost money to go to the Doctor and it is very inappropriate of a company to demand employees to produce a Doctor's note for just one day of being absent. The whole purpose of PTO/sick time is to cover an employee in their absence. Why even have it if you are still going to require employee's to go to the Doctor for a note? What really says the most about this is they pay so little and have a policy that requires this? The nerve. Management started acting petty towards me once they found out I was looking for employment elsewhere. The Manager started trying to obstruct my requests to take time off. Up until she found out I was trying to leave my requests would be approved quickly but after she found out she stopped making any effort to approve them and her boss had to be the one to approve it. Also Credit Union policy was not equally applied amongst all employees - specifically the attendance policy. There was a certain employee at the Oak Ridge main office who in the 6 months that I was there missed far more than she worked. It was every day or every other day she was out due to some reason. Always something. Employees would talk about it and even laugh about it...."oh x is out again. What is it for this time?" but nothing was being done about it. Even when this particular employee did not have time to cover her absences when there is technically is "no such thing as unpaid time off"....nothing was done. No parental leave policy. My last con for anyone considering working here is that there is absolutely NO opportunity for advancement of ANY kind here. None. The only way you would advance here is if someone were to pass away or retire. That's about as direct as I can put that. If you are someone who is older and who is no longer looking to advance and wouldn't mind being in a stagnant position then this would be the perfect place for you. But if you are not that kind of a person then I would highly suggest that you look elsewhere for other employment opportunities.
