Pros

Tally used to have a really great culture. Goofiness was encouraged, working there was fun and the people are top notch. Work/life balance was pretty good before layoffs. Everyone there is onboard with helping people be "less stressed and better off financially." I've never worked for a company where everyone had such a strong commitment to the company mission and it was honestly pretty powerful.

Cons

Tally has prioritized building out features as fast as possible for so long that the technical debt feels insurmountable. It feels like nothing is getting done now as we address it. Processes are completely broken if they even existed in the first place. Leadership has no clue how to fix this. They say a lot of words about fixing things but they seem to be empty promises. Leadership has no idea how to lead the company into the future. Zero vision. It seems like our marketing has strayed from us moving towards "complete financial automation" to pushing our CEO as a thought leader. It just shows there's not much substantive progress being made towards our ultimate goal. Diversity used to feel like a priority but a good deal of our gains there were eliminated when layoffs happened in May. I feel like this is another area of empty promises and a lack of empathy. Morale is pretty low following layoffs and I just wonder how Tally plans to bring that back. If I were looking for a job right now I would think long and hard about joining this company.

Pros

Everyone is really interested in the mission of wanting to make people better off and less stressed financially Friendly group of people. Welcomed with open arms from the first day

Cons

Not a ton of diversity, particularly in leadership. And no particular diversity trainings or focus in the day-to-day Leadership is just not strong. Some people are simply leading areas of the business because they were there early on, but don't actually have a POV on their function and are unable to lead, motivate, and guide a team. There's the distant vision of "automating people's financial lives" but we haven't even defined what "automation" means. What are things users should control vs. we take care of? Those sorts of things are core to the product so should've been answered or at least be on the radar to be answered, but the team is just unable to focus on some of these core questions. Similarly, sometimes people drink their own Kool Aid too much. We don't like to compare ourselves to certain traditional financial solutions out there because that's not a great story for investors or PR even though our products overlap a lot with theirs. The team needs to be realistic about what the product actually does and where it actually fits in the landscape at least when it comes to internal discussions and not try so pretend to be something fancier than what we really are that we ignore reality. Really hard to get things done because of lack of process and role definition. No process for roadmapping or OKRs or anything. It's just very haphazard. The company is at a size where at least some of these things need to be clear. A lot of foundational things wrong with the product that keeps it from moving forward because always need to double back and fix something.

Great team but disappointing leadership

Pros

They’ve put together a really smart team of talented people who are enjoyable and fun to work with. Great product with a lot of promise! Supportive and positive coworkers.

Cons

Management and leadership is very inexperienced, but seems to subscribe to an antiquated idea of how companies should be run. Despite talking up “don’t say nothing”, they don’t actually seem to listen or take much responsibility. Worse, managers seem to be in competition with each other, or maybe just receive conflicting direction from leadership. The way people are promoted also seems odd and arbitrary or based on friendship and there are a lot of double-standards. There is also a lot of talk about diversity but it is very surface-level and doesn’t seem real.
