Administration is awful

Pros

Your coworkers are fantastic, hardworking, dedicated, and awesome to be around for the most part. Watching the kids change over time and get better is wonderful. Lots of room for moving up in the company.

Cons

Awful hours- primarily second shift, but I have worked 2:30-10:30, had to stay until 1 in the morning due to paperwork, and then had to wake up and work 6:30-2:30 before. The administration is completely out of touch with reality and cares more about filling beds and making money than they do their employees. There are typically 3 staff for 12 kids, which is a joke. Administration will berate staff for making hard decisions when it comes to the kids, but when they are on the floor they will make those same judgment calls and sometimes make them faster than direct care staff would. Seriously, staff were lectured at for 2 hours about one such hard judgement call one day, and THAT SAME NIGHT an administrative member made the exact same call that she had just lectured us on earlier that day.

Interesting Job

Pros

Very independent job! You control your schedule for the day.

Cons

Even though it’s “make your own schedule” you end up having to work around clients time which is hard. Can make for long days.

Pros

I worked at Tanager for two years in multiple roles, beginning as a Youth Service Worker and later transitioning into a clinical position. This job requires genuine passion and commitment—especially to the kids we serve. The youth at Tanager have experienced significant trauma, and they need consistent, compassionate support. If someone is only in it for the paycheck, this isn't the right place for them—the impact on both themselves and the kids can be harmful. My time at Tanager helped me grow tremendously, both personally and professionally, and deepened my love for this kind of meaningful work. - Working with the youth - Skill building - Team work

Cons

One of the more challenging aspects of working at Tanager is the high stress and high turnover, which can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Because of this, it's crucial to truly care about the work and to support one another as a team while on shift. The kids at Tanager have experienced significant trauma and often struggle with mental health challenges. As a result, they may express their emotions in difficult ways. A key part of the job is helping them work through those moments and build the coping skills they'll need after they leave the program. - High chance of experiencing burn out
