Pros

A genuinely passionate and talented team who frequently go above and beyond Nice concept

Cons

Staff churn rate - far too many people burn out or get fed up with the overly-emotional management style Poor strategy - far too short-termist. Not enough understanding of market dynamics especially when it comes to working with retailers. This short-termism also sets highly-skilled people up to fail - poor planning, short deadlines - leading to rush through product development and market research Superficial desire to understand the customer - all the right words said about learning from the customer but founders would ignore that information if it contradicted their opinions. Irrational decision making - there are things that clearly don't work but management are not willing to change because it's part of their 'vision'. Not brave enough to pivot from white elephants that suck up way too much resource. Poor work life balance - An example, one colleague was working on new projects in addition to regular tasks. They got slightly behind (I mean less than half a day behind). The founders response was to say 'they should work whatever hours it takes to get the work done even if that means working until midnight'. This was someone going well beyond what they were paid to do - not one iota of consideration for their well-being. This happened frequently. Culture & values - the team care about creating a positive and honest place to work. Sadly this is not shared by the founders. They certainly espouse the values in public but the reality is very different.

Pros

Beautiful brand, and lovely staff team

Cons

Company suffers from founder syndrome. They trade on it being a 'family company' which is odd language - very strange and emotive communication style from founders, from hugging you one day to making you cry the next. Weird experience, was so glad when I quit and no longer contributing to the giant plastic island in the ocean with their cheap over priced products. They refuse to discuss sustainability issues of their kits.

Hi there, Thanks for your review and kind words about the brand and team - we're proud of them both and couldn't agree more! We're sorry to hear your experience wasn't as amazing as it should have been - we're currently working on career pathways for team members to give everyone the chance to grow. We think our Founders are pretty great, and again we're sorry if you didn't feel the same - we'll be sure to see if there's anything we can be doing differently. On our products - due to their nature, plastic components are used for us get the safety certification required, ensuring the best and safest experience for families. Our amazing Supply Chain team also just presented their CSR and Sustainability strategy - we're really doing our best to make a positive impact and be a leader in the Toy industry! Thank you for feedback and contribution to Tech Will Save Us in your time with us, and best of luck with your future roles. Best, The Tech Will Save Us Team

A painful disappointment

Pros

To add to a common theme: there are a number of truly exceptional staff members: exceptional in their talent, dedication and empathy, and from whom nobody could ask for more as colleagues. There are few other small companies that provide the opportunity to work on relatively unique and interesting products, and the breadth of things to learn while working here is unusually large. Exceptionally good branding, digital, and product design - the company punches way above its weight in this regard, and this is valued and upheld internally. Equipment/IT and general office management is very well executed for a company of this size.

Cons

Against a background of high staff turnover and unrealistic company targets, staff - particularly junior staff - are encouraged to work long hours and to make the business and the work a core part of their lives, for no additional reward or acknowledgement. Those who manage to pull through end up digging their own graves - "exceptional" overwork becomes the rule due to the founders' inability to see that this is not a sustainable way to run a business. Numerous talented and capable "buffers" were hired in recent years to try to mitigate the operational and managerial failings of the founders, but they were driven or pushed away when it became clear that they were undermined or otherwise not empowered to make the necessary changes. Extensive lip service is paid to wellbeing, inclusion, and even work-life balance, but this flies out of the window at the first sign of stress or pressure: instead, these platitudes become another tool with which the founders can gaslight the employees into believing that staff wellbeing is in any way a priority. Similarly, the company "values" are used as bludgeons for getting the founders' way in almost the same breath that they are used as examples of a positive culture. Name a toxic startup trope - you will find it alive and well here.
