Apprenticeship Program is Misrepresented

Pros

Job hunting support. Can count apprenticeship as work experience on resume.

Cons

These people present themselves as a group of charitable do-gooders that help select groups of people without a formal computer science education into software careers but in reality these are business people . You must provide a large part, if not all, of the salary you will be paid as an apprentice upfront as well as cover the cost of training through grants from your local workforce center. Techtonic group itself does not invest its own money in the form of scholarships or “loans” of any sort and they use their mission statement of helping others to gain industry contracts.

Some of this is true and some is inaccurate. We are a for profit company and we expect a lot of our apprentices and our employees. There is absolutely no cost to our apprenticeship program. In fact, we pay apprentices to participate in accordance with DOL guidelines. As a DOL certified apprenticeship, we do receive funding from grants and WIB's to help subsidize the program. We couldn't do this without them. We make a significant investment in every one of our apprentices and we expect good work in return. We would never belittle anyone. It is in our best interest that everyone succeeds in our program. I am sorry you left feeling the way you did. We probably could have done a better job of managing your expectations.

Pros

The education I received from the apprenticeship was invaluable. The instructors at the time I was in the cohort (early 2019) were incredibly supportive, dynamic, and full of information. I would not be in this field still without them and without the incredible opportunity to be paid to learn. Many of the mid and senior level devs on the floor (in the main part of the company outside of the apprenticeship) in early 2019 were also key players in my growth and development. I had many great learning opportunities with a strong safety net before I was sent on a contract to hire opportunity with another company.

Cons

As soon as I was sent on contract to hire I was basically abandoned by the company. My sole worth to them was the profit they could make off of me. My direct manager was wonderful and still checked in often, but after a few weeks I simply couldn't wait to get away. When the time came for me to transition full time at my new company, away from Techtonic, senior leadership began meddling and tried to negotiate my new salary and position for me, at a far lower rate than I know I could get and was worth. I'm assuming this came from some false sales pitch promise that their apprentices would accept outrageously low pay, in an effort to sign more contract hire employees. I have only distrust towards the upper level management after this, and most of the good ones have left by now anyway. The original academy team has all since left and an apprenticeship program hasn't happened in almost a year now, for what seems like dozens of excuses, none of them valid. Countless of my friends and colleagues were furloughed or laid off in the previous weeks and months, under the thinly veiled excuse of COVID, when really they haven't had enough work to keep employees off the bench in many many months. I truly see no future left for this company.

Pros

You will get exposed to a lot of different technologies Gets you in the door if you are just starting out but you'll want to find somewhere else as quick as possible.

Cons

This place is a con. They charge crazy rates for people they call senior developers who are really just apprentices that have come out of their boot camp. The bootcamp is a joke and doesn't teach what is needed for the clients that the company was working with. Executives don't communicate with management. Deadlines depend on what the client wants not how long it will take to develop, and development teams are made up of mostly apprentices and maybe one real senior developer that knows what they are doing. Stack always changes which means that everyone is always learning something new and there is no experienced employees to help when it comes to blockers so the team can meet deadlines. Executives and Management are reactionary to where there is no plan on how to move forward, everyone feels like they will loose their job at any time. Pay is well below average for the current market. Before COVID-19 they were already doing layoffs because their model was failing.
