Pros

Benefits are good. If you like deploying the opportunities are plentiful. There are bonuses and tuition incentives out there as well. A little extra cash is nice to have from drill checks, sometimes extra work is available.

Cons

a lot of stress due to the organization. multiple deployments are the norm now. GOOD OLD BOY SYSTEM affects everything from schools, promotions, positions, you name it. I've seen people kill themselves working for the units, costing them their families many times and they get slapped in the face by the people around them as far as giving awards for their work to people who didn't do the work. Passing over for promotions, giving school slots to individuals who were less qualified. This is a very political organization to say the least. The backstabbing is an ongoing thing. Deployments are very painful because most of the leadership is inexperienced especially compared to active duty. Most people just become numb and desensitized to the politics and backstabbing. The "Im not surprised" statement becomes the norm when you hear about who got victimized now.

Political Backstabbers

Pros

you can still achieve a retirement

Cons

I worked on Camp Mabry for 10 years in mutiple primary staff offices. So I got a first hand look at the top. Extremely political organization that promotes incompetent managers. Most talented people leave, seems like only mediocre individuals move up. If your not connected to a high ranking AGR officer you will get no where, and if you are watch out because you'll probably get backstabbed by them. Technicians, ADOS and enlisted AGRs are treated like second class citizens. Make sure to never cross an AGR officer, it will be the end of your career, right or wrong. Don't waste your time with IG, JAG, EEO, etc... leadership does not action any findings that come out of these offices. They're treated like a suggestion box that nobody reads.

Pros

Retirement benefits, training and school opportunities, and small amounts of part-time cash. Those are the ONLY reasons that anybody would stay here long. Things like "service to community and country" are talked about a lot, but not practiced in reality. If you believe your talents will be used and developed here... good luck to you.

Cons

From top to bottom, the organization is breathtakingly politically defiled and equally committed to both preserving the status quo and running off potential talent. Protection of full-time positions and serial backstabbing in order to gain and maintain a full-time position are job one. Much worse, those in a position to do something are numb and indifferent to the everyday injustice and long ago gave up on trying to take care of their people. For the sizable full-time force... everybody gets hosed, they still get paid, and life is good. Aggravating and sad, yes, but when it gets you killed overseas it should be inexcusable.
