Pros

Due to the high turnover, you will be exposed to a wide variety of jobs that you will not normally be exposed to in another company. Colleagues are really nice and helpful though that may be because everyone has a common enemy.

Cons

There is a reason for the high turnover. Where do I start? Egomaniacal founder/CEO who likes to be surrounded by sycophants, the real possibility of being unpaid when cash runs dry, poor or zero management centred on one person and paid/sponsored advertisements disguised as rigorous research. The 3- to 6-month honeymoon period is spot on.

Pros

Central location with lots of food options. Some colleagues are nice and friendly but others view newcomers with scepticism because of high turnover. One almost feel as though they are thinking how long will the latest newbie last!

Cons

Where to start? From the unkempt office to daily chaos to dysfunctional management! Everyone is at the mercy of the chairman's whims and fancies and unpredictable moods. He can send 100 messages in an hour ranting and raving about the most minor of issues. Or he can act like a kid and say unreasonable things like "I want this done now!" at unearthly hours. The other senior managers are helpless and lack the courage to support their staff while everyone goes through the drudgery. It is a most depressing place to work in!

Dear Former Employee Thank you for your comments. I apologise that there was no one to attend to your comments in the past. I have taken note of them and will be incorporating them into our improvement programme. Because we do have more than 13 employees with more than seven years, there is a strong sense of a certain way of doing things. We do need to improve our new staff orientation and training. You must have been with us during a time when we were weak at the managerial level. The reason for you being exposed to the chairman’s ranting was that there was a lack of a management layer at that time. This resulted in new staff not being able to be onboarded properly. I am happy to say that we have good leaders for our different businesses now, as well as a layer of more experienced employees working well with the chairman today. Anyone joining us now will undergo a better orientation under the leadership of the respective managers. We are constantly moving into newer areas such as multimedia and digital, and so there is always a sense of learning something new. I also take into account your point about the unkempt Singapore office. We had been in the same building in Singapore for more than 15 years and we needed to spruce up the office, which we are doing now. The chairman keeps “yelling” at us to go digital and remove the clutter, and we are working on it. I am sorry that you thought that your experience was bad. Do contact me if you have other valuable suggestions. Sincerely, Hillary Tan, htan@theasianbanker.com
