Pros

Staff was very friendly and everyone was respected regardless of their duties. Regular reviews were conducted by managers in order to help employees improve their performance. The Program Officers were extremely knowledgeable, sharp and had strong relationships within the community.

Cons

Communication was sometimes problematic especially when a major decision was made to take the organization in a different direction. This caused moral to suffer and led to an exodus of talented employees. You can learn a lot about the nonprofit community and philanthropy but there is very little room for advancement beyond the role that you are hired for.

Pros

The Foundation is well known and respected in the community and the staff is hardworking. There is also the opportunity to interact with many community stakeholders, such as grantees and partner organizations. Work/life balance is also encouraged.

Cons

The office is pretty siloed by department, and even within each department by team, and has a very corporate atmosphere in general. This not only affects culture building, but also communication. For the most part everyone is friendly and cordial, but there are some people don't even say hi to you when they pass you in the hall. Seems to be a bit cliquey too. Top management doesn't reflect the communities that the Foundation serves very well either - they're 99% older and white. There are the token minorities at the top level, but not nearly as diverse as it should be for an organization that claims to have Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as part of its core values.

Don’t Come Here For Growth

Pros

Network opportunities! Because the organization is so large and influential, you connect with people across the city of Boston/Boston region. Also they have good benefits.

Cons

Huge culture of perfectionism and power hoarding, ageism and sexism. There is also an insane amount of turn over because of how toxic the organization is. There is no growth or leadership development , with a hierarchal org structure that stifles creativity, and lacks transparency. Junior staff are treated horribly because managers at this place have no experience actually managing and supporting their subordinates, and the only way you can receive any level of agency and leadership is if your manager isn’t threatened by you. Oh and be prepared to not receive any onboarding support when you start… you’ll just have to figure it out on your own!
