Start-up CONSULTING Company: Great People, Growing (w/ some Pains), and Opportunity (If You Seize It)
Pros
#1 - The people. Your colleagues will be driven, smart, creative, and help you up your game, if you lean in to the experience. And, they do enjoy a happy hour! #2 - The ownership. You are responsible for your results and your career. If you have an idea or a passion area, there are ways to pursue it in the context of your work. The onus is on you to make the most of the ambiguity in a situation. #3 - The experimentation. From initiatives around design thinking, new technologies (including Slack, Zoom), new strategic pursuits, and marketing plays, you get broad exposure into what it takes to run a business as well as to be consultant.
Cons
Helps if you have experience working/interning in a more formal, established corporate environment before joining. You'll have more grounding in traditional consulting and a point of reference on what's different in this environment. Most staff members are extroverted processors (dialogue, whiteboarding, and brainstorming) to complete work. More often than not, you have to work from home to get heads down thinking accomplished. Fast-growing company. The growth is exciting, but processes, knowledge management, and senior leaders must focus on client delivery. As a result, staff development may not be a top priority, and staff needing/desiring more grooming will feel unsatisfied.
