Pros

The on-the-grounds staff are amazing, care about their jobs and treat each other like family.

Cons

A new CFO came in about 5 years ago and created a completely toxic environment. When I started working, it was facing many of the challenges small newspapers face, but succeeding as the sole source of news information for a region, often by the grit of the on-the-ground employees. In the last 2-3 years, top-down mandates and frankly shady ethical practices has made it almost impossible to do good journalism out of this newsroom. If you ask about a wage increase or push back about ethical practices, you're almost sure to be laid off. It's so sad because the people in the newsroom — doing the real work — are some of the best in the business.

Pros

Pays well, hybrid schedule and flexible hours

Cons

Micromanagement, favoritism and toxic culture run rampant. Employees are pitted against each other which sows distrust and causes team dissent. Very mentally and emotionally draining
