Pros

The training was good but surprisingly tough. It's also a good starting point to break into the industry. The community of Data Schoolers is great. There is also a variety of placements so you get to see different companies

Cons

1. The 2-year contract. You'll have to pay when you leave. Read your contract carefully 2. Even if you're ready to pay the break fee, They'll do everything to stop you from leaving. There are terrible stories from leavers who got bad treatment from management for leaving. Management will erase all traces of you when you leave, as if you never existed. It's weird 3. Salary is way below the industry standard. People who leave early seem to be doing even better than people who stay, given the job market. Sometimes you wonder maybe you should have waited for better opportunities 4. People will misunderstand that you're a student because of the naming of the company

The Data School Response

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry that your experience with the School wasn’t what you wanted. As you are aware The Data School has been designed to launch the analytics careers of anyone with a passion for data. The process of nurturing that passion starts from the application process and carries on far after you have qualified from the school after 2 years and 4 months when you become a member of The Data School Alumni which is for life. The path to an analytics career is usually not possible for most people hence the school being created and it is special in this regard. We commit to making each data school member a great analytics professional by time they have completed the course. Unlike any other job, for the first 4 months, you are trained and certified by some of the leading professionals in the analytics space whilst getting paid of course as this is full time employment. Following this is 2 years of placements. The value of this work experience is clearly explained in the interview process. These placements are essential to round out your experience as a data analytics consultant. Once you have graduated jobs are available to you in abundance. Its interesting that you say salaries are below industry standard but it would be impossible to get to that salary level without the Data School education. I’m sorry that you feel this way about the school when so many who have completed their commitments (who are now in the Alumni) have sparkling careers now in analytics.

Pros

I don’t see any of the reviews mentioned some of my points below so I would like to give info that you might’ve not seen on the job ads to those who are considering to apply for the program. Key word: the bench It actually started on a pretty good term, intensive training but 4 months passed by quickly. Then you got welcomed by the bench with full of hope that you’d go on placement very soon. Unfortunately, the layoff happened, not once but twice, a bunch of people got made redundant, including from Sydney and Melbourne with no written notice! Overall I think it was a good program, you learned from some of the best resources and also from real clients’ projects. It probably went down hill due to not adapting quickly enough with the market demands (they were focusing too much on Tableau and Alteryx, 80% of the training was for these 2 tools). The culture was pretty good too, nice people to work with, company was quite generous when organising events, parties, etc until recently looks like they started to go on budget due to not making enough profit, which is understandable.

Cons

Very low salary too but you signed for it so…

Pros

Training is paid and offers career changers and early careers professionals the opportunity to develop and gain experience. Workplace is a really welcoming one and the people are generally excellent. Company will pay for any cert or training you want to do in the field and there is lots of opportunity to develop when on the bench between assignments Good hiring procedure that looks at your skills/potential rather than CVs Decent social scene if you're into that

Cons

They are not at the cutting edge of the tech stack so some training is a bit obsolete. They seemed to be addressing this as I left. Its a bit of a "Mill" as they hire and "make redundant" staff constantly then hire a new batch, rinse, repeat. Pay is low especially considering what they charge clients for your services There is a golden handcuffs clause in the contract that states you have to pay a substantial sum back to them if you leave before the 2 years are up. These kind of punitive measures never scream good management. Arbitrary mandates about office v hybrid so not particularly flexible.
