Pros

Dedicated staff Impressive scientific achievements Wonderful colleagues in entry-level positions Hopeful mission Pushing boundaries and how we approach conservation, community, and climate action

Cons

Lack of diversity in work force Low wages perpetuated by mindset that people are "lucky to work here" Hierarchal structure that removes equitable voice Lack of transparency No internal interest to change policy to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment Fear-based work environment where having varying opinions leads you to write-ups with HR and your job threatened No ability to safely report workplace harassment and managerial bullying

Avoid the Education Department

Pros

I loved my coworkers, being in the museum, decent benefits.

Cons

There is no room for growth in the education department and they value the status quo and the illusion of power over anything else. People with no management experience get moved up the ladder and create a truly toxic work environment. Every single person I worked with, outside of management, was actively looking to leave. The vibe is "you're lucky to have a job." They work really hard to make sure that people are silo'd within the department and within the museum. The management is known to be personal friends with HR leadership. Trying to make any change, do innovative programming, or general make the museum a better place to work/be is met with arbitrary punitive actions, pushing out the brightest people. Being racist, ableist, sexist, and homophobic will apparently move you to the top!

Pros

I worked on very cool projects. The museum attracts a certain type of person that's really smart and dedicated, slightly weird and offbeat, and great to work with. They have excellent health benefits and good work-life balance.

Cons

Always an "all hands on deck" mentality from upper management to excuse not giving yearly raises. Organization is extremely top-heavy with big pay disparities between directors & lower level staff, and few opportunities for advancement for many positions. High employee turnover.
