The downside of working here has always been its publisher, who has no prior experience in the industry. There was never a meaningful long-term vision or set of values guiding the magazine’s operations (outside of trying to make it profitable at any and all costs). That resulted in a toxic workplace that left staff feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and burnt out, all while being chronically underpaid. Turnover and morale were huge problems long before COVID rocked the business.
