Toxic Culture

Pros

-Some of the people who work for the Navigators are very kind hearted, genuine, well-intentioned, and humble people. -Fundraising is very challenging, but can be very rewarding and an awesome growing experience. -Opportunity to work with college students and help them grow in their faith was rewarding and meaningful.

Cons

-The culture is horrible. Blatant sexism, manipulation & subtle shaming, lack of boundaries, favoritism, promotions/responsibilities based on politics rather than merit, lack of accountability (campus directors go completely unchecked), young staff are treated like they are elementary schoolers rather than college graduates...so many serious issues. I believe that most people in the Navigators have good intentions but over time some people get clouded judgment due to fundraising stress (causes some people to become manipulative) and good old boy culture (higher up men's arrogance is indulged/overlooked).

Pros

Care about your development Want you to do projects that you enjoy Great God-loving people Overall, The Navigators are people who love God and want the best for others.

Cons

Have to fundraise when promised differently You're sold on a big vision for your work that they're not able to fulfill Lack of communication and resources wasted as a result People will invest in you only if you talk the talk and walk the walk - free thinkers beware

Pros

There are many people who genuinely care about you and are kind at Navs. The HQ are beautiful and fun travel can be involved.

Cons

For as kind-hearted they are, Navs can be quietly controlling and restrictive. If you fit into their dominant culture, you'll be fine, but if not, there could be bumps. Dominant culture = male, White, individualistic, outdoorsy, American. If you are comfortable in this dominant culture, you'll fare well. But if you have different ideas that the old boys' club doesn't know how to make sense of, they're not going to bend over to make sense of them and you'll stall out. If you're a woman and show any leadership potential, you'll face opposition sometimes explicitly but more often implicitly in the way people treat you and respond to you. Short version: They're culturally incompetent and aren't doing the right things to fix it.
