Pros

My 5.5 year stint with Toole Design was a real blessing. On the professional end, I came to Toole Design as a long-time editor who had no experience in engineering or planning . I got wide range to edit everything from proposals to client memos to final deliverables; full-throated support from leadership as I led writing trainings and presented to technical staff; and encouragement to dip my toes in new forms of communications and planning work. Toole is full of hard-working people who are willing to consider new ways to add polish to what they do. Also, the vast majority of Toole's people believe in its mission, and you feel that in the day to day. On the personal end, some really big changes happened in my life while I was with Toole. My father died, I moved back to my hometown, I got married, and we bought a house... and my managers supported me through all of it. They were flexible about my workload and hours, receptive to my requests, and open to finding ways for me to get what I needed while maintaining a relationship with the company.

Cons

It's consulting. There are times when tasks can add up, projects can get overwhelming, clients can be thorny, and management can ask a lot. From what I know, that's par for the course in this industry. Also from what I know, there are more paths to mitigating it at Toole than there are elsewhere.

Pros

The staff are the top planners and engineers for bike and pedestrian design in the field.

Cons

There is little opportunity for advancement. You tend to get stuck in role and stay there. There is little in the way of training or professional development. Rather than giving staff the right tools for mistakes, the blame is put on the employee rather than management taking responsibility to train the staff. There is a lot of rhetoric on equity but the company doesn't resemble the communities they work in. While there is a lot of talk about the need for diversity in hiring, there is no accountability from the 100% white leadership to change the culture. The few people of color are in admin roles or lower level positions.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am sorry that you didn’t have a good experience. Training and development are very important to us, and we offer a variety of internal training including Wow moments in our weekly staff meeting, monthly departmental trainings, a database of 80 staff-led trainings, a mentorship program, our database of internal Subject Matter Experts, and external professional development opportunities. Advancement is common here for our talented team members, and promoting from within is a deep value here, and we are proud of the 73 promotions we have provided to our staff in the last 18 months, and 75% of our staff have received a promotion within the first two years of their work here. Diversity and equity in our workforce is something we acknowledge we need to work on and, while we have made progress in diversifying our team, we know this is work we must focus on and we are committed to increasing diversity at all levels of our team, because we are striving for equity and know we cannot get there without representation at all levels. Again- I am sorry that you didn’t have a good experience, but I welcome additional feedback and comments, as we are always working to improve the experience for our team members. I wish you my best in your job search and future endeavors. HR@tooledesign.com
