Benefits are good: work from home is flexible, health benefits are fully covered, etc. Pay is pretty decent for a nonprofit.
Cons
Morale is very low, lots of turnover, change/improvements move at a glacial pace, disconnect between leadership/the board and staff, limited upward mobility, and there’s no dedicated development staff so it often feels like sink or swim with finding more grant funding to fund your position.

This input has informed a lot of change over the last 5 years. We're intentional about building a work culture where people feel connected, even in a primarily remote environment, and retention is stable. We still have work to do around the flow of decision-making. As a small org, upward mobility is an issue although we're building out more entry level roles for the public health workforce. The director's team has taken a more proactive role in collectively working on sustainability. As a learning organization, we aim to learn from our mistakes and appreciate this input. Thank you!
100% employer-paid health premiums (medical, dental, vision). Everyone gets to work from home at least one day a week. The staff are great; I've made a lot of good friends. Pay is better than most non-profits, although how much you make varies depending on which project(s)/funding source you're on.
Cons
There are a LOT of changes happening right now: loss of funding, new CEO (who was the old COO), a TON of turnover of employees...morale is pretty low, and no one really feels like we're getting enough information about the future of the organization to feel comfortable (hence the turnover). Staff are constantly asked for our opinions, but then our input is ignored.

As we enter a new search for our next executive director, we're taking this feedback especially to heart. Morale in particular is top of mind for the team and we address this through lots of communication. Over the last 5 years we've conducted two comprehensive salary surveys to ensure that our salaries are competitive and the ranges are transparent. Our Director of Philanthropy builds strong relationships with funders who are invested in public health solutions. We always have something to learn - the key is that we incorporate these lessons as our organization grows and matures. Thank you for this critical and helpful feedback!
