Pros

Nice group of interpreters that you work with

Cons

There is big turnover of office staff because of the way that staff are treated. Long hours with little flexibility. Two tiny stools in kitchen if I want sit down for lunch. Wages are low. Owners are hot and cold hence staff getting fed up.

We try to balance what we can - we are a small company, very busy and dynamic, we manage a huge amount of people on very tight margins on state contracts. There is little margin for error or un-professionalism or problems ensue. I don’t agree that you suggest we deploy interns as you suggest, we are very much in demand by universities to provide some temporary work experience for student internships in the language industry, it also means that we have to provide a level of training and support that requires additional resources form our side. It seems your experience was not as positive and fulfilling as you’d hoped. I hope your ambitions are being fulfilled wherever you are now.

Pros

Flexibility and good life / work balance

Cons

Often work last 1 hour in court. You are left with 1 hour wage (€15) after 1 hour travel time (15-30 min travel each way) and bill for parking. in other words effective rate is €6,50 per hour. good luck

We agree some practices on some contracts are difficult to manage on a micro level. Its impossible to refer specifically to which precise moment you are referring. We have the same challenges too trying to balance things out for as many people as possible, as you know there is a huge push by government to reduce costs and the provision of multilingual services (inter alia interpreting) in the criminal legal sector is no exception. Every week however is different and some weeks are much more fulfilling than others. Don’t give up, don’t give in, we are all in this together.
