Game of Thrones type politics

Pros

Working at a zoo is as much fun as it sounds. Friendly people, lots of animals, and some decent benefits.

Cons

The zoo used to be two separate entities that eventually combined into one company. These two constantly fought and combining into one did not change that. Different departments have different allegiances and though some people hate the political infighting, there are plenty of instigators who will use their position to cause trouble. While there, through various 'anonymous tests', the employee's expressed distrust of the organization and management as a whole.

Company Culture Issues

Pros

The title says it all, there is great potential and the job should be fun. You work with tremendously talented people. There is joy to be found but the culture is toxic.

Cons

There is no work/life balance. Instead, martyrdom is expected, to show loyalty. There are serious issues with leadership, especially on animal care side. The level of distain guest services expresses about guests behind closed doors… or publicly on social media… is disgusting. There are a lot of territorial disputes between departments. It’s toxic.

Full of Potential

Pros

Forward-thinking CEO, great location and city, good collection, new projects prioritized, great people, tangible steps towards a positive work culture

Cons

Continued education almost non-existent, issues with animal-side management (VP & three curators are stagnant and problematic), training & enrichment program is difficult to navigate because of curator, pay is not equal to workload or experience
