Toxic Workplace

Pros

Some nice people lower down the hierarchy

Cons

Toxic Culture of bullying. My background was constantly poked fun at by one very senior staff member in particular. Buzzword heavy strategy and, most frustratingly of all, you will not be listened to one bit. Employees are not valued for their unique outlook or skillset but are chess pieces which allow senior staff members to keep taking home shamefully large paycheques in comparison to the hard-working delivery staff. It is also worth noting that, owing to the constant changes in direction, you have very low job security. Some incredible professionals have been made redundant with zero notice because of this.

Awful place to work - don’t do it!

Pros

You will meet dedicated and talented people but they will be driven out of the org very quickly (most gone within less than a year).

Cons

There is a prevalent bullying culture at Turn2us which is driven by the attitudes and behaviour of the senior management team. Witnessing or experiencing homophobic, racist and misogynistic comments and behaviour was a regular occurrence - more often than not the perpetrators were members of the SMT or it took place in their presence and they did nothing about it. There was an inadequate HR department/processes which meant that none of these incidents were ever dealt with appropriately. Consideration of staff mental health and well-being was non-existent - it was not uncommon to see staff members in tears. Job security is low, with members of staff regularly being made redundant at short notice, only to be replaced with people who the SMT had previously worked with/knew.

Pros

You will be paid on time.

Cons

I’m an ethnic minority female and a current staff member. My husband is White, our beloved child is what is called White passing. Ethnic minority employees are patronised by the management, supported when our opinions match those of the management but there is an obvious undercurrent of hostility when our views do not conform to their own. The most vocal who push these assumptions are White, who have an attitude of paternalism towards us and aggressively try to assume leadership roles in order to “save us”, that we need their “protection and guidance”. Treating us as if we require their benevolence rather than treating us as equals is White Supremacist and that attitude is pervasive here, it is so patronising and grotesquely offensive to experience. A very smirking condescension, an insincerity, you will be regarded as a skin colour first and then a person. Turn2us is also institutionally racist. We had anti-racism training in which minority ethnic employees were to be segregated from White employees and encouraged to discuss how racism affected us - essentially that White employees are responsible. White staff members had their own session in which they were condemned for their “race guilt” in perpetuating discrimination. My child and husband are not guilty of this. Emails are routinely sent to everyone at Turn2us in which White employees are harassed for their “White fragility”. It causes resentment, tension and division. To believe that it wouldn’t is to believe White people are somehow more sophisticated and superior. Again it’s racism and White Supremacy masked as paternalism. What you need to understand is this: the charity has clear policies against bullying and racism. These are irrelevant. Work place bullying is still a serious problem and it discriminates based upon race. I sincerely hope for the sake of my daughter that those who irresponsibly encourage this type of racism are ostracized from any management positions in future. Judge an organisation on their deeds, not their words.
