Pros

I worked for the postal service for 27 years and made over $100,000 per year. The health and life insurance is good during employment but are lost as soon as you retire.

Cons

The postal service is a horrible place to work and I would not recommend working there. I worked for the postal service for 27 years in management. They don't value their employees at any level. I was considered a great employee and received many awards. I also worked over 80 hours a week to keep up with the workload. I was not compensated for my overtime because I was in management and considered an exempt employee. On a weekly basis I would be in meetings with high level managers and would witness this lack of concern for the employees. More work pushed on them, perform faster for higher productivity and go after any employee that uses sick leave including the ones that fall under the protection of FMLA. They grossly mismanage and waste vast amounts of money. The retirement is horrible. I would advise anyone considering a job or career with the postal service to stay away. Ask any employee or former employee if they feel or felt valued or appreciated for their work. The majority of the answers will be negative.

Pros

Benefits, national so you can transfer or promote to any location, we all work for delivery to every person, every house - so what you do touches everyone you know.

Cons

Working in mail processing requires shift work and 7 day a week work. In delivery having to work in all elements of weather. Currently the uncertainty of the organization with mail volumes declining and the increase in social/electronic media.
