NewCo - New day - New challenges

Pros

Working at Umbel is never boring. You'll learn every single day if you just show up and engage. There is plenty of opportunity to make an impact in the future of the company since merging with MVP Index. There will be a new company born here in the next few months. Getting to be a part of that can be a rewarding experience if you've got pioneering spirit in your blood. The combination of the leadership team that is left and the new leadership team in place seems like a good one. They are getting their hands dirty in the business and that will only lead to good things. We have funding and runway again with the MVP Index merger that we needed in order to keep growth stable.

Cons

There are warts of course and probably the biggest here is the turnover among employees. Because of that, the company has a relatively young team with much of the more senior talent having left the building. To be expected in the world of tech startups in Austin I guess, but it's never good to see talent leaving. The benefits are some of the best you could find in Austin currently, but expect they will get cut back in an effort to be fiscally conservative.

Pros

The workspace is inspiring (Seaholm Power Plant on Lake Austin), the benefits are fantastic (Open PTO, 4 Month Maternity Leave Policy, 2 Month Paternity Leave Policy, Full Healthcare Coverage, Competitive Pay), the market is fun (yay sports!), and the team is amazing (hard-working, fun, intelligent, and respectful).

Cons

Things change frequently around here, which can be stressful (at least for some people).

My Umbel Experience

Pros

Exceptional people. I’ve worked with many awesome Umbelers, past and present. Umbel has always hired smart, talented, hard working employees that care. I’ve met a lot of awesome individuals and made some very close friends working at Umbel. Healthy work/life balance (especially for a startup). Lots of flexibility to work remotely or on an adjusted schedule. Good benefits (paid health insurance, unlimited vacation, progressive paternity/maternity leave). Opportunity to work in an exciting vertical with awesome clients. Book club, Umbelitas speakers, taco teams, board games, and new hire pecha kuchas are some of my fondest memories. Great opportunity to challenge yourself and develop your skills. More than likely you’ll take on responsibility outside your core job description. If this scares you, than Umbel is probably not the place for you but if you're adaptable, like a challenge, and willing to try new things, you’ll gain a lot of experience and exposure to different areas of the business. Every Friday morning, the whole company gets together to eat breakfast tacos and share company updates. The meeting is streamed live for those that are remote so everyone can participate. There are some exceptionally funny individuals at Umbel, that always make these meetings entertaining.

Cons

While professional development is encouraged, it’s very much on the individual to take on their own development.
