Pros

Great coworkers, loved the people I worked with.

Cons

Terrible management, over worked, and lack of direction. Systems were outdated. Every-time they launched a new system for something, they would rush into and leave clear technical problems. Then, instead of focusing on fixing the technical problems, they would blame employees for "User Error" and start a new project and leave clear holes and issues with the old project. You are told to basically only contact IT when your computer stops working, and when you do report it they ignore it. The person running IT is known for secretly sending conversions to various department heads while "helping you" only to get you in trouble for asking for help. They set everyone up to fail and are over worked. They give people more than they can do and if they don't see you getting it done they demote you or just plain out fire you. A lot of the direction from management is contradictory. They will tell you not to do something, and two days later ask why something wasn't done about it. Management thinks that all they have to do is point their fingers and tell people to do things. Many of them just sit on their phones, talk about sports, etc, and wonder why nothing is getting done. And while they do this they pass all the work onto people below them that are not there to do those duties. They only promote the young guys, and all the people who have been there for decades and actually know the company or ignored and are not promoted. There is clear sexism and age discrimination. They tend to fire people who actually try and make changes to get things done, but leave employees who don't do anything and have clear performance issues. You feel as if you are always being watched and can't say anything with out being talked to for not being a "team player". Management has been heard openly complaining about people not being "loyal" and being ungrateful even after he's demoted them. They changed structures in the departments with out any warning. Management is also extremely condescending, to the point of talking to you as if you were a child. They are also extremely right-winged politically and tend to bring politics to the work place and shut people down and berate them if someone doesn't agree. People have tried complaining about the clear abuse to employees and the CEO and HR clearly doesn't care nor hold anyone responsible for it. Also, I didn't receive an exit interview. It was clear that when I put in my notice, that I was not going to get one. I was ignored for the last week and was expected to have everything done before I left despite that time period being clearly too short for the amount of projects they had me working on. Over all, it was mess.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and we are sorry you feel this way about your time at United Hardware. We have very good and hard working employees, including our supervisors and managers, here at United Hardware. We strive to treat everyone fairly while at the same time addressing and working through performance concerns. At United Hardware, promotions are well thought out, ensuring individual skillsets are ready for the next level within the organization to set them up for success. There are times when managers make structure changes within their department, with the intent of realigning individual skillsets and experiences in order to drive the best results for the organization. We do agree that we can always improve on our communication surrounding such changes. Concerns brought to the attention of HR are always explored and addressed with the necessary individuals in private so it makes it difficult for employees to understand how things are being addressed and worked through. It is unfortunate that you did not receive an exit interview as we generally meet with employees who provide us with a notice and are here on their stated last day.

Overworked and underpaid

Pros

Flexible hours. Many hard working employees that care about what they do.

Cons

The company hires incompetent people with little or no education to keep the pay low. They are cheap beyond words. Employees work under fear of losing their jobs, overall atmosphere is a cesspool of low moral. The launch of a new computer system is doubling the work of every employee. Management does not what to hear any negativity. There is an attitude if you don't like it, there is the door. Many unhappy customers, vendors, and employees because of a botched system launch.

While your post is quite old, we are just starting to work with Glassdoor and wanted to respond to your review. I first of all want to thank you for recognizing our hard working employees that we have at United Hardware. At the time of your review we had just gone ‘live’ with a new ERP system which ultimately had a very successful system launch, with little to no business disruption. We couldn’t have done it without those hardworking employees that worked directly on the project as well as those who took on additional work outside of the project. It is no secret this was not an easy time but we got through like many good companies due to the commitment of our employees. In regards to morale, this is something that we are definitely in-tune to and are making some progress. This encompasses all employees and lots of dynamics and is never an easy thing to change. As we come to work every day, we all have the ability to approach the challenges of the day the way that we choose. We hope that employees take a positive, helpful, and collaborative approach to their day knowing that positivity and a smile are infectious. We hold our dealers/owners in very high regard and want them to be successful retailers. Our board of directors is an elected board that does hold the management staff at United Hardware accountable for servicing both member and non-member dealers. The board as well as management staff relies and counts on our dedicated employees to do their best every day to provide this service. There will always be challenges but as long as we all work together, we can overcome them.

Not a happy place

Pros

Nice people to work with that help you learn your job since there is no on board training. Busy with lots to do which fills your day.

Cons

Employees are not happy because they are asked to do more than expected than job indicates. Pay does not equal workload. Turn over of jobs says enough. Not fun to work when you can't talk or enjoy a laugh every now and again. No communication from the top management. No rewards, or recognition or even a thank you.

Thank you for providing your feedback relative to training and morale. We continue to enhance our training efforts and processes within each department. We do invest in and provide recognition to our employees through Years of Service awards, Employee Appreciation events, and Employee Club functions. It is unfortunate that due to your short tenure, you were unable to have these experiences. Morale is something that we continually work on and is something that doesn’t typically change overnight. However, we are proud of the fact that the average employee tenure with United Hardware is 11 years, which includes many employees with 20-30 years of service.
