Pros

There is a lot of security with being a federal government employee. You can't get fired because someone doesn't like the way you look, or decides to hire a nephew. I worked all types of criminal investigations, including white collar fraud, drug cases, burglaries, robberies and assaults. It is a law enforcement position, and you are expected to work 45 to 50 hours per week. The starting salary varies, but you will be making over $100k after 4 years. Great benefits and a pension. You are a federal agent with all the authority of the FBI or other agents.

Cons

Can be stressful. Depending on your assignment you may be on call some evenings and weekends and expected to respond. You will sometimes work in bad areas, executing search warrants, surveillance, and arresting people. You will sometimes be considered a postal employee for some benefits, which isn't always good.

Pros

Monday - Friday. If you wanna get paid and do nothing, you'll fit right in. Only 20% of us actually work real criminal cases.

Cons

One word... BOGUS!!! At the end of the day you are a postal worker, doing corporate security. They promote people who have never worked a real federal case and know nothing. Have fun sitting in front a mailbox and arresting someone for J walking. Oh and No take home ride! Gotta love it!

Pros

Some of the cases worked on were interesting and rewarding. Many of my co-workers below management level were solid people and a pleasure to work with.

Cons

The biggest downside is there is no upside. It's kind of like working at a buggy whip factory, or maybe Polaroid. The USPS is a dying organization, as is USPIS. They haven't hired in years, people are leaving in droves, and the management and goals change on a monthly basis.
