So Much Potential Squandered by Poor Management

Pros

Decent benefits and smart/motivated people.

Cons

You can work from home = you need to be online all the time and work all the time. People are always constantly in fear of losing their job. Turnover is very high. It's a very unforgiving environment. The company is understaffed and not reaching it’s targeted goals so people are overworked and demoralized. There are inconsistent standards and expectations across the board. It’s very cliquey and employees don’t trust each other. Senior execs are visionary and want to change things but middle management has poor management/leadership skills to lead that change. Lots of egos. Pretends to care about employees with "perks" but does not truly invest in important employee initiatives such as hiring, HR in general, management training, mentoring, or diversity.

The worst management communication

Pros

Fun, smart people Lots of opportunities to develop new skills Good networking with other employees

Cons

They hire contact workers to avoid paying benefits How they think you're performing is never clearly communicated, and the expectations change all the time You could be doing well and above what you have been asked to do, and think you're doing an amazing job and then suddenly you're let go because your role or the company structure has changed. This has happened to several Upworthy employees over the years. Unlimited vacation = no vacation because you're too afraid to take time off

Lack of Diversity

Pros

Having the option to work remotely, good willed employees.

Cons

Hardly any diversity & inclusion. Majority of the organization is run by hipsters that live in Brooklyn which leads to very homogenous thinking and culture. Very high executive turn over - this is a sinking ship. Heavily reliance on Facebook algorithms for results. Employees have very little work-life balance and always have to be "on".
