Pros

Their motto that they started with when they first created the company. If they had kept that up the way they had when I first started working there, they would still have employees their that care about the company. The community and the way they treated their employees at first was the reason I accepted the job.

Cons

They are utterly disorganized. Management is crap. LET ME REPEAT, MANAGEMENT IS CRAP. There is no growth opportunity in your career unless you beg and pry for something. Even then, typically only the standard white Cali/NYC startup kids have gotten any sort of management position/are listened to. That part is really sad, seeing as 3 out of the 5 cofounders aren't white. UrbanStems likes to act like they represent other races and cultures well, and think they are diverse. This is wrong. They have "token" black people and asian people they use in all of their marketing. Marketing team and basically all of corporate is 99.9% white. But HEY! you hired that random black person to help out in Ops and on the Happiness Team, so it's all good now. They have this "drink the startup koolaid" mentality. They think if they toss in a pizza party, and occasional beers, that we'll ignore the other issues. Quality of product has nosedived, its embarrassing. Finances are all over the place and being spent in the wrong place on the wrong things. They stopped caring about their employees and started chasing the money, started over paying themselves, over paying for really stupid marketing, over paying for new employees to come in and "fix" things, and underpaying others who had been there for years and dedicated so much of their time. Their were so many great minds and people willing to help this company succeed, but they are too caught up in the stupid "cool" factor rather than the quality and employee care that was what made them stand out. Now Stems is just another 1800 flowers.

Pros

50% employee discount (but note that the product quality has gone way down so there’s a very good chance your flowers arrive DOA, "send horrified," not "happy"). Finance usually approves an extended budget for happy hours so take advantage of that.

Cons

The senior leadership at this company is ill-equipped to get this business to profitability. The majority of the junior staff is miserable and burnt out (and leaving in droves). Nobody seems to know what they’re doing but if you have an ounce of knowledge in your field, be prepared to take on 2-3 other roles to make up for the incompetence of your manager and other teams. Echoing a similar note from past reviews: you will have to threaten to leave to get some kind of promotion or raise, whether it's deserved or not. Ignorance is bliss at UrbanStems and you will be baffled by how mismanaged this place is. Most teams can barely retain talent, with Finance, HR, and Merchandising being the biggest culprits. The business is essentially burning money at this point so if you like working for unstable workplaces and are comfortable losing your job in 1-2 years, UrbanStems is the place for you. But honestly, save your time and sanity and work anywhere else.

Pros

Junior staff and lower-level leadership work extremely hard to keep the company afloat despite numerous challenges.

Cons

Aforementioned colleagues have to work with horrifically inadequate resources, among them an IT/systems nightmare and corrupt suppliers. Salaries are embarrassingly below market value, no doubt a reason the company has thus far failed to comply with NYC’s new salary transparency laws. Recent layoffs coincided with new, lower salary bands being announced. I regularly watched a member of senior leadership bully others in meetings, and this individual has been protected by HR for years. PTO is often tacitly ignored by leadership and email responses are an unsaid expectation. But don’t worry, you can watch a shrill woman teach yoga from her living room as one of the nine meetings on your calendar on Thursdays. Flowers, while being colorful and fun, are also a hugely wasteful and environmentally damaging industry. The company is doing nothing to combat this at any level.
