Pros

Good opportunity if you'd like to work in the tourism field obviously, get to be involved with many different projects and make connections in the industry. Before the Pandemic layoffs there was a good core group of people outside of management that had fun working together.

Cons

Quite simply, it starts at the top. Under the founding CEO's leadership, like any company we had our issues. But when the new CEO took over in 2018, there was an immediate and noticeable divestment in the general staff's professional development and appreciation. This ranged from converting the office to an early 2000s-fad open plan layout with tiny workspaces, to not allowing anyone below the executive level access to the industry conferences they had once enjoyed. This was matched by the creation of a "C-suite", with 7 (later 8) c-level titles for an organization of around 60 people, who then exclusively enjoyed the perks all staff had once had access to, often staying at the fanciest hotels in the process. They also relied more and more on external agencies for work, ignoring the staff in house, preferring to hold agencies accountable instead of investing in the careers of the people under them. Their commitment to diversity is also a joke, where nothing but indifference was shown to certain diverse members of staff, preferring to make media appearances feigning a care for diversity the priority. This was further exacerbated by the recreation of 6 Vice President level positions, where no people of color were elevated to these titles. For some it was well deserved based on their time at Visit Philly, others were new staff members seemingly riding the wave of nepotism. When the pandemic hit and layoffs became inevitable, unfortunately all the random big no-return projects in the last year (like Podcasts) left the org financially incapable of holding onto many good people - preferring instead to seemingly preserve exec salaries and cut lower level staff (many felt from an exec team who would constantly and loudly announce all the things they "did" for the company, not announcing they had taken cuts seemed pretty suspect). A lot of dedicated and talented people were lost, and those that remained were subjected to a “be grateful” culture and (as one previous review alluded to) unintelligible rants from the CEO.

Leadership should be ashamed if they could feel.

Pros

Junior members were hard-working, passionate, and could find their own inspiration despite the demoralizing conditions.

Cons

Self-proclaimed C-Suite would belittle anyone who wasn't "in the club". New positions were made most likely as favors or ways to line their own pockets. They just as easily talk behind your back as they do smile at you. Normal everyday perks for all staff members, regardless of rank. were taken by upper management which eventually got so bad they had the new "open floor plan" staff members by the door taking the phone calls and opening the door for visitors and deliveries. Their diversity and inclusion initiative is a joke. We can see right through it. Take a look at their PR. Not exactly the narrative they spend so much time (but not effort) talking about. The worst part, upper management saw a pandemic as an opportunity to line their pockets. First staff members were fine due to government funding. Somehow that didn't last past June. Whoever was left was doing the jobs of many and told to be grateful. A shameful shell of its former glory The city should be embarrassed, probably investigated, for sending any funds here now. This "tourism agency" was milked for all its worth in a matter of months by greedy individuals with a complete disregard for those that took a job already had bad compensation compared to equal positions elsewhere. The corruption here will likely be taught in history books soon.

Toxic leadership

Pros

The lower-tier employees (who do all the work) are overall great. They're smart, talented, hardworking people who love what they do and are fun to hang out with. If only they had a voice in how the company operates... The PTO and holiday schedule is pretty generous. If you're a white man — gay or straight — at the vice president level or higher, you'll do just fine here.

Cons

This is the most broken environment I've ever worked in, and I came from a startup. A lot of the negatives have been discussed in other reviews, so I'll stick with this: The most infuriating thing about working at Visit Philadelphia is how much effort the CEO puts into pretending to care. Soapbox speeches, staff surveys, lame diversity panels — all of it is about him being able to say he asked for feedback. The reality is that the company has lost track of its mission to promote the city and is now just about making the CEO look good on the pages of the Philadelphia Business Journal. The people who do the work can't even get their ideas heard and more often than not, marketing campaigns are done by consultants who charge a ton of money, never meet deadlines and are all white men, despite the company saying it screens vendors for diversity and inclusivity. Work here if you love being gaslighted.
