Great Culture

Pros

There is a lot of thought and effort put into the culture of the office which makes it a very enjoyable place to work. There are monthly team events and weekly happy hours which are fun. The office is dog friendly and there are always snacks. I think the people on the team make VSSL a great place to work. They’re all hard workers who are fun to have a drink with at the end of the day! Management is also good about including the whole team on a lot of decisions and gives you different avenues to make sure your opinion is heard.

Cons

I think the stressful aspects of VSSL are all things you would find in your average agency. There is a lot of work and it is a really fast-paced environment. But I think the tight knit crew and office culture act as a really good balance to this.

The burn out agency

Pros

Some of the people are nice. The view is nice too.

Cons

There’s a feeling that burnout is the fault of the employees instead of the way the company is run. Clients always come first, no matter the costs. You’re expected to give an incredibly high level effort for low pay and menial benefits. Deadlines are ridiculous and often projects are so underbid just to get the business. Then it is on the employees to make it work with a short timeframe and limited hours. If a project takes longer or if there are mistakes from rushing to meet a deadline, the blame falls on the employee not the lack of planning or support or QA process. In general, the level of work here is very much a chop shop mentality with the client dictating the entirety of the project and how to execute. There is no strategy or creative input from vssl. There’s little room for growth at this company. Career paths for each department have been “a goal” of management for a little over 2 years now with still little to show. There’s no leadership and if you want any growth or progress you must define your own path. Issues and problems are not addressed head on. Neither principal is direct when there is a problem. They will listen to you and your issues but then do nothing. The main approach to conflict here is hope really hard that it goes away. This includes bad clients, internal conflicts, and underperforming employees. Turnover here is astounding and more than any other place I’ve worked. Out of the 18 employees only the principals and 4 employees have been there more than a year. This is not because of growth but due to 12 or so employees quitting in the last year. There are a few people who don’t have a background in marketing and learn skills for projects on the job. This would be ok if this time weren’t being billed to clients and if there were someone to guide and teach. Unfortunately this is not the case. The bigger issue here is that the agency is too cheap to hire someone that is qualified and instead this subpar work costs clients in the long run. There are a few people that carry the entire load of the agency and there are others who coast by exclusively working on VSSL content as if it’s a full-time client. The workhorses will get nominal raises but then be expected to do even more work. All hands quarterly meetings will focus on “if we want more good stuff like PTO and beer, we need more billable hours.” It’s never considered that some people are at their breaking point and physically cannot bill anymore hours and that others are doing the bare minimum. This place never learns from its mistakes and can’t take action. The principals treasure peace over conflict every time to the point where it created a completely toxic environment where the entire group of people who built VSSL left. Problems are ignored until they either blow up or just fester under the surface.

Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed working with some of the crew and agree that our view here in Point Loma Harbor is unmatched! We are sorry you felt negatively about your experience and wish we could have done more to keep you happy. We truly value the input provided by our crew and work every day to make VSSL a better agency. Some things we have implemented on the project management side are more formalized project processes and scoping, and ongoing strategy planning sessions for our clients including enhanced monthly reporting. Internally, we now have quarterly performance reviews, defined growth paths, weekly 1:1s with team members, and monthly All Hands meetings to ensure the crew feels informed and connected. We have grown a lot as an agency, and as one employee noted, “we get better and better with each new hire.” We are action-oriented and truly value the crew first. There can be rough seas in agency life, and growth as an organization, but our crew is stronger and better for it! Thank you again for your feedback and for working at VSSL. We take all of these comments to heart and are always working on making VSSL a great place to work.

Disappointing

Pros

Beautiful view, dog-friendly, beer is always stocked in the fridge, met some cool people.

Cons

I do not recommend working at VSSL if you value career growth, work-life balance and a chill work environment. Leadership is not trained to adequately support employees, if you report difficulties with a client or with a team member it often gets ignored. Leadership also shows clear favoritism to certain employees, and any issues with them with go undressed, bringing down team morale and making it seem like your voice doesn’t matter. Leadership also does not stand up to rude and disrespectful clients, so if you enjoy being treated with dignity and respect as a professional, do not expect that here. Regarding the workload, leadership often will micromanage and overpromise to clients so the rest of the team has to deal with unrealistic timelines and an overwhelming amount of work, once again contributing to low morale.
