Pros

-Most of the people working alongside you are talented survivors who are bonding over unpleasant experiences that exists there -Emotional support you'll need daily will create strong friendships -Great place to test your professional and emotional limits- you'll know what you're made of

Cons

-Turnover like revolving doors- 10+ people left in the last few months, it's a trend -Days off and holidays are another word for guilt, there's no space for decompression -Departments are understaffed and underappreciated, salaries are unfair, bonuses are sad -Owner preaches honesty but reacts with hostility and yelling, no place for constructive criticism, upper management doesn't support your growth -Much of upper management developed so much arrogance and inflated ego over the years that it leads them to be openly rude- to employees, to subcontractors, even to clients. To the outside the firm appears to be prestigious- what's happening inside is disorganized -Someone in upper management has an amazing talent for micromanagement to a pathological degree, leadership is compromised by nepotism and no accountability -Employee hierarchy is built on ego, favoritism and fear- if they don't like you, you'll know- no matter how competent and professional you are -Owners openly admit how they don't trust their own employees -Lack of accountability and search for a scapegoat is a constant theme -Feedback only welcome if it confirms what owners already want and believe -People are scared to speak up or "keep their head down"- a clear sign of an abusive and fear-driven culture -Strong emphasis that you are easily replaceable and don't matter

Pros

Everyone is incredibly kind and hardworking (with the exception of a few people in upper management) Restaurant projects are beautifully designed, and managing these projects is very interesting

Cons

-I’ve been in the industry for decades and have never seen a poorer run company -Bare minimum employee benefits -All employees are overqualified and underpaid, and there is no tiered salary structure to compensate people as they improve. For years, I have seen many people ask for raises, and be turned down. -Absolutely no operational standards or procedures. No business development goals, they’re stuck 30 years in the past. -Only focused on building projects as cheap as possible. Every subcontractor bid is awarded to the lowest bidder, regardless of quality. this makes trade coordination in the field next to impossible -lack of standardized internal procedures makes communicating between departments absolutely awful -one of the higher ups refers to the company’s profit as “his money” and has seemed to make it clear that all his employees are pawns to make him wealthier. This shows up in his actions, the way he treats his employees, and the way he speaks to them. It seems like he has absolutely no genuine care for the people who spend their lives showing up everyday to work here. -One of the women in upper management is one of the worst people I have ever worked with professionally. Her actions come across as abrasive, angry, and incompetent. She seems to have absolutely no idea what she is talking about 70% of the time and makes it everyone else’s problem. When you tell her that she is in the wrong, she seems to play the victim card and does not ever seem to assume responsibility. Over the years i’ve been here, I know multiple people who have left vanguard solely because she is so impossible to work with. -someone in upper management has said multiple times that “employees are easily replaceable”

Pros

1. Great exposure to the construction industry and solid learning opportunities for someone new to the field. 2. Supportive coworkers and approachable leadership, especially in my immediate team. 3. I appreciated the trust given to take initiative on tasks and contribute to real projects early on. 4. Fast-paced environment that helped build my confidence and multitasking skills.

Cons

None that come to mind. Every job has its busy moments, but I always felt like I had the support I needed.
