Pros

I learned that high turnover at a workplace is a red flag (Circulation Assistants at Vaughan Public Libraries [VPL] have a very high turnover). I also learned never to apply to VPL again...

Cons

This library system does not value its employees. So many of my fellow Circulation Assistants had injuries from not receiving proper training for the numerous physical demands of the job. Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) does not even come close to how busy the Toronto Public Library is, but the higher ups at VPL must have convinced themselves that it is the busiest library system in the world, in order to justify what they put their employees through… When I was a Circulation Assistant, I was frequently pressured to work beyond my limits (and even to skip breaks) in order to meet a quota of carts shelved or to complete all my tasks during my desk time. To this day, I do not understand why those duties required so much pressure... I found that Circulation Assistants were looked down upon and were heavily micromanaged by almost everyone, including Information Assistants, Librarians, and ESPECIALLY Clerks. Information Assistants and Clerks are not Circulation Assistants' supervisors on paper, but some certainly acted like they were. (At the branch where I worked, one Clerk would even give new or more naive Circulation Assistants her work to do...) There were also often unprofessional discussions in the workroom, such as some employees openly talking behind other employees’ backs, and discussions about political topics that would be more appropriate to have elsewhere. There is also little opportunity for growth at VPL, particularly for Circulation Assistants. I truly believe that the higher ups at VPL do not care about Circulation Assistants, and this attitude is a major reason for the mistreatment of Circulation Assistants at VPL, and also contributes to the high turnover for Circulation Assistants there. This minimum wage job is not worth the mental toll or the damage to your body. If you are interested in library work, I highly recommend that you apply to another library system...

Pros

Good opportunities to take initiative and gain experiences in library field.

Cons

Upon being hired, there was no support or training provided. Training was passed from manager to manager and never fully got completed. I was also given the impression that asking questions and seeking support was frowned upon. There is terrible communication between upper management and staff regarding their own jobs. Employees are given no say or choices within their positions. For example, with the organization being severely short staffed, employees are expected to carry a heavy workload that goes beyond the scope of their positions. With the lack of support, staff find themselves in positions where they are unable to step away to go for their breaks or to get a sip of water. The environment is very toxic and employees find themselves very burnt out and unhappy, which is why everyone continues to leave. Many complaints have been made about the manager at the Vellore Village branch who is known to gossip about other employees behind their backs, refuses to grant any employee a day off even though they are overdue on vacation hours, and constantly guilt trips and picks fights with employees.

Pros

Staff - the actual staff for the most part are some of the most incredible people you will meet. Kind, supportive and full of great ideas and programs.

Cons

Executive Management Team (EMT) & certain managers - lack of understanding what their employees do, no compassion or empathy and consistently provide a culture of "you're replaceable and should be satisfied with what you have". If you are a librarian, you almost certainly will not find a position available. If you are a full-time information assistant, you will be expected to perform librarian tasks without recognition or compensation. And good luck getting a promotion or lateral opportunity as they lack transparent and fair internal interviews. If you are part-time or casual, you will be expected to perform tasks equivalent to a full-time level. Don't worry about being trained, there isn't any. You will learn everything as you ask everyone around you for support which, they are so willing to offer as they themselves rely on each other to get by. They have demoted staff without warning. Changed job titles to replace staff they don't appreciate. Let go entirely staff they deemed 'redundant' Consistently promote an open door policy which they do not follow.
