Unhealthy culture and few opportunities

Pros

* Good benefits like flex holiday/PTO

Cons

* Verbally abusive environment and 'point fingers' without even doing the due diligence. * Extremely difficult people to work with. * Really loud people (some time even disrespecting other co-workers) and very distracting environment. One time, I noticed two male colleagues yell at a female colleague without even letting her speak on some task. * Technical leads don't have enough knowledge on how domain works nor they want to keep an open-mind on approaches. Some leads just want to use 'buzz words' and not understand how it works and applied. * If you value mutual respect and psychological well being I would high recommend not working here.

Pros

Compensation and benefits were decent, although when I left I ended up making 20% more. There are some good people in management and leadership roles who “get it” and are trying to transform the culture, but at the time they didn’t seem to be winning the political battle.

Cons

I would caution anyone being hired into design, research, or product management roles to ask a lot of questions. User-centered design and Agile are the new buzzwords in government contracting, and Ventera is one of many firms trying to use them to differentiate itself. But unlike competitors founded in recent years on modern ways of working, Ventera is relatively older and still trying to transform itself internally. The tools were lacking for a tech company: it was still an (Outlook) email culture; conference rooms weren’t equipped with video. And most importantly, it’s hard to claim any real expertise, help your government clients implement modern product development practices, and push back on unreasonable client demands / timelines when you’re still struggling against your internal team, who doesn’t understand design and is more comfortable operating as a feature factory without a roadmap. These dynamics shouldn’t be underestimated. On my project at least, they resulted in a distrustful, adversarial, and eventually just plain toxic work environment. Systemic problems were consistently blamed on individual failings. Colleagues became physically sick from the mental and emotional stress. When concerns were raised to management and leadership, some people seemed to understand and empathize, others made outlandish promises, but none were ultimately able to make concrete changes. Be really careful if you're looking for more than government contracting as usual and if transparency, trust, and psychological safety in the workplace are important to you.

Pros

- Company really believes in College Hires and Young Grad; Invests in their personal and skill development - Pays for training if its deemed to help with your career/project - Welcoming and flexible work environment - Open Door policy with higher-ups

Cons

- LOUD! People don't really worry about how loud they are and generally feel free to talk as loud as they want. Can get overwhelming and distracting - Salaries are not as competitive - PMs can hinder growth if they really want to... - Not as competitive an environment to be a part of - Always things happening that prevent you from concentrating on work, more so around holidays/festivals
