Unsustainable place for longterm employment

Pros

A hugely talented and diverse team. Never in my career have I seen a group of coworkers band together to support one another so deeply in both creative and personal pursuits. The HR team has been pushing the company to allow for a healthier work-life balance for their employees.

Cons

Vidico represents the worst of what upper management within the advertising and film industry can look like. From an HR/Management level, employees can expect subpar payment packages, a lack of growth opportunities, management who do not listen to employee concerns or complaints, and an overall toxic workplace mentality. Management at Vidico has a reputation for trying to get the most bang for their buck, and this comes at the obvious expense and disregard to the mental health of their team. As a creative, the company promises to push the boundaries of new work. But most employees will find that their work is repetitive and boring. Up-skilling opportunities will be constantly promised but rarely delivered on. To anyone looking to join this team, I would strongly advise reaching out to existing or past employees and contractors to inform your opinion before signing on.

We’re thankful to hear that you think we’re a supportive workplace, as it’s something we care about deeply across our 1:1s, meetings with HR, leave options, hybrid working, project distribution and weekly check-ins on bandwidth. Regarding your criticism: - Renumeration aligns with Payscale and is typically above market average. It’s negotiated with each team member at the offer stage and reviewed annually. - Vidico was one of the fastest growing video production companies in Australia over the past two years. There are many levels of leadership at the company, and as such, growth opportunities in each role. - Recently, most of the company including leadership took a day off and went on a beautiful hike together. Like you say, it’s a beautiful group of co-workers. Our leaders are people too and they spend a large part of their time listening in team meetings. - Vidico only expects full-time team members to work hours as per the NES. As this is a national standard, we do not accept that this has been set in disregard for team member’s mental health. Both founders and managers have been provided mental health training, and have designed the workplace benefits in part from that training. Any overtime can be taken off or is paid. - In the past six months, the talented team members you reference won Youtube Campaign of the Year and 5 Muse Awards. All of us are proud in what they’ve achieved, and believe their work should be respected. - Senior management doesn’t sign off on creative and never has, unless it’s the occasional brief they work on or write themselves. The client will sign off on the creative, and always will. What you put forward is what will push the boundary. - Up-skilling: for years, there’s a weekly team meet in each department to discuss level ups to processes and tools. There’s subscriptions to multiple, quality platforms for learning. There are monthly training sessions to talk critically on video. There is training, and there is a considerable amount of listening at all levels. If you are able to edit your response to include any recommended and specific solutions, we are more than willing to listen to them and take on feedback. We hope that in time, your view on the company will change for the better.

Business is failing

Pros

- Opportunities to collaborate with skilled professionals - Ability to work remotely 2 days per week, no flexibility on which days. - Employees based internationally or interstate seem to report a more positive overall experience compared to those situated in Melbourne, where the founders are based

Cons

- Substantial employee turnover - Below-average industry compensation. Salaries haven’t improved since they were a start up. Their competitors pay more - Inadequate pay raises, not aligned with inflation (3% raises vs 7% inflation), even in cases of exemplary performance and promotion - High workload, substantial overtime, excessive pressure from founders and upper management - Extensive micro-management via time-tracking applications on all company computers that record sites and apps visited and duration of breaks - Founders have limited experience in video production and business management, make poor decisions and are not receptive to feedback. Instances of vindictive behaviour towards employees who offer advice - Erosion of work quality due to excessive budget constraints and time pressure - Even a single day of sick leave necessitates a doctor’s note, and employees may still be asked to work a half-day I’d recommend that individuals considering a role within this organisation seek feedback from former employees. This is the kind of workplace where people congratulate you when you quit.

Toxic environment led by unqualified leadership

Pros

The team outside the founders were amazing to work and connect with. Unfortunately even this is lessened as leadership tries to stamp out connection between teams to keep loyalty only to the company.

Cons

There are many but: - Leadership headed by founders who don’t have the experience to be running this company, and don’t take advice from those who they hire that do. This is really the main issue and everything else I mention trickles down from this. - Lack of flexibility in the work environment, which includes time tracking apps that pause if you’re away from your desk for more than 5 minutes and forced + inflexible in-office days that could only be swapped with a medical certificate (3in/2out day split) - Lack of decent pay rises. If you get hired make sure you’re happy with what you start off on as you’re unlikely to go up much more in your time there - Lack of respect or willingness to understand that mental health is something that should be catered for. No, doing a first aid mental health course is not enough so you qualify on paper - Lack of creative ownership. If the founders want to take credit for an impressive client or production, they will force their way into the project and take over. If you try to push back, you’ll be punished. Ultimately this place creates an environment of fear, not support, and wont help you in your career.
