Pros

{I have worked in various depts seasonally for years} Lots of available work & .. "work", potential freedom (depending on department), easy going, low investment atmosphere (*depending on department*), reliably available in a remote area during the winter. There are a lot of really down to earth people who are grinding their way through the motions here, and some of them make the best of it and try to spread that. Owner at least keeps the place open and running so everyone who has been there still has a job. They will do everything possible to pay you as little as possible and care about nothing, but at least they will sometimes open the "Starbucks" to workers etc after atrocious peak event season slogs.

Cons

No direct deposit, Depressing & dysfunctional culture. Owner/high management makes every effort possible to be cheap & pay as little as possible, no benefits or incentives, no job fulfillment. Depressing atmosphere, sometimes stressful & tedious (especially the clientele & upper management/owner expects everything from workers for almost nothing...most likely from neglect/apathy & lack of thought than anything else). There are a lot of nice chill people, and also a lot of conservative, ignorant people. Sometimes it overlaps. Sometimes the latter are also chauvinistic, arrogant "big fish" folks who take their power as a much needed & likely only boost they have, and trample over responsibility and integrity to the people anywhere "underneath" them in ranking-- in reality there probably isnt much of a pay gap and the people making minimum have learned a long time ago that none of it is worth investing or caring about. I'm pretty sure this is just a defunct italian front from the 80s-90s, and its now stuck in limbo because noone will buy it & its incredibly outdated/a sunk investment. The people who return here religiously from Jersey/Long Island/NY do so because of nostalgia or group trips, and i think it only floats itself off of contracted annual events (which workers do not make more from, but break themselves over. (Even the land honestly is overrun with incredibly invasive plants from decades of bad landscaping practices) Generally: expect disappointment and adverse reactions for actually doing a good job or working with integrity (or hard) in most cases and departments. Show up, *make sure you actively take care of/advocate for yourself and your pay*, do what u need to, call it in, get a check, and run. At best, its what the owner is doing (presumably while biding time eternally to try to get someone to buy the place, possibly enjoying it as a vanity project). They will literally let or try to force you to work through your state mandated 30 min break while its busy (and when its not), then give you $1 off the lunch menu when you take it (so you're paying them back 1.5/hr wages to eat), then send you home early when its no longer busy. Possibly also stealing your tips (again depends on who is directly above you and above them). Avoid working with the kids, events, and getting in the less desirable buildings/atmospheres non-stop especially during big events in the summer (ie. be aware it will be crazy and packed with often obnoxious people at peak season, and choose accordingly). ASK for details about everything regarding pay, and monitor it, especially tips. Know your rights and the laws. You will get used and manipulated out of overtime, and possibly required breaks if you dont track it. Also be aware that the dysfunction is coming from the top down. If you dont like 1/2 assing things or getting punished for not doing so, find somewhere else. If you're desperate dont expect more than minimum wage no matter how qualified you are, and dont invest your mental or emotional energy here.
