Disorganized Without Vision or Direction

Pros

There are some very capable and intelligent people working here, people who really want to make a difference. Unlimited PTO. Snacks in IT.

Cons

Executive leadership cannot figure out how to work together and prioritize projects. The CTO/CIO is a terrible leader who has no business being in the position. He wastes time on flashy projects that the business doesn't want or need. He is more concerned with how he looks than anything else and would NEVER admit to making a mistake. He compulsively lies to cover his errors and thinks no one can tell. He is consistently disrespectful to others and doesn't respect the talent or experience of the people in the department. He micromanages people terribly and will frequently modify code in applications without telling anyone and without testing it. We rarely get to complete projects because projects lack executive support, specifications, and usually you get pulled off a project mid-way to work on emergency requests. We spend our days putting out "fires" and if you ask when a project needs to be completed the actual response is "yesterday". The mantra of the CTO/CIO is to "make as much money as possible" "without looking stupid". The organization as a whole is incredibly immature and there really isn't any clear directive on what the organization should be focusing on. It's hard to see if the CTO/CIO behavior is supported by the CEO/Owner or not, and I'm not sure how much of the toxic culture is created from the very top down. All I know is that it's a miserable working environment and we are losing good employees to better opportunities left and right. Health benefits are awful and expensive.

CIO Causes Project Paralysis

Pros

The IT team is trying to make the best of terrible management. Healthy snacks and snacks that will make you fat. Choose your own device.

Cons

Without a doubt the worst CIO I have ever worked with. He talks out of both sides of his mouth and is confused why everyone is not on the same page. When employees deliver an interpretation of the poor direction, they are blamed for the bad outcome. Across the board this is causing project paralysis. The CIO, in perfect knee jerk fashion then removes resources from the project teams so he can run parallel projects with no one to reign in his terrible judgement. Problem with this? The teams he leads have no business SME, causing major operational issues when the software is delivered to the stakeholders.

CTO Needs to GTFO

Pros

The company is growing, appears to be financially secure and has a good diversity of business units within the supply chain space. There are phenomenal people in all divisions both intellectually and interpersonally.

Cons

The CTO is, simply put, incompetent for the role he is in. As another review notes he is a good developer, but does not appear to have any of the skills needed for the role he was moved up to. Communication from the top down is awful and mocks the company name of "Visible" as there is hardly any transparency and visibility. There is absolutely no trust between all levels of the IT department and the CTO, and that lack of trust in the CTO appears to have bled into the business as well. False promises of timelines and capabilities are made on a whim both internally and externally, and then the developers are expected to deliver within those unreasonable timelines without being given any clear direction or business input. The term "leader" cannot even be used to describe the CTO as head of the department, as there is no semblance of geniune leadership present. If you're looking for work within the IT department LOOK ELSEWHERE until this mess is resolved by the executive team.
