Some Serious Problems

Pros

A lot of autonomy and flexibility. Very smart, talented, and hard working people to work with across the enterprise. The worker bees of this company are some of the best people I have every worked with!

Cons

The birth of the Utah office was the downfall of this company. It lead to the executive team being staffed all by people who were religiously affiliated with the CEO and not qualified for the positions they were given. The one woman on the executive team is the only one worth anything, and she is by far underpaid and under appreciated. Too top heavy and refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings. Made a lot of bad acquisitions and have still not learned how to integrate companies. They are in a very precarious financial situation which has lead to continuing to ask people to do even more with less. This company was already understaffed. There is very limited opportunity for movement or growth.

Pros

The best part of working there were its dedicated people and commitment to the industry.

Cons

There is absolutely no commitment to the employees or shareholders. The leadership team lacks talent, strategic vision, or insight on how to manage or lead. During my year there I witnessed gross incompetence from the top, which hired its own religious cult, like minded executives that did not possess the skills or experience to ethically run the company. The results continue to be gross negligence in purchasing obsolete and scrap material in the area of $100 million; hiding this invested capital in huge leased public storage in the caves, offering stock options to its employees, while knowingly going to announce an equity revaluation of $450 M. The leadership team holds everyone accountable that is not able to effect positive change because they won't listen to reality. I worked in overland park holdings for a year and never saw senior management once. Then I spent at least 3-4 weeks in Salt Lake city headquarters and never once saw senior management. Mark De Young and his crony Steve Nolan are bilking the shareholder and employees dry while they laugh all the way to the bank! Shame on the board for continuing to allow them to drive this potentially great company into the dirt. Leadership requires participation not continuous revolving doors of more incompetent managers. Rumors are that the board is heavily staffed with religious affiliates in Salt Lake City that continue to protect them; they take care of their own it seems. I would not recommend going to work for this company until they clean up the leadership at the top; then work their way down the organization and hire skilled leadership that can effectively turn the company around. This only happens when the board holds them accountable.

Negative Environment

Pros

Great Location. Good workspace. Good Co-workers.

Cons

My comments relate to finance. Other departments may be ok. I've never seen such a negative work environment. Co-workers are discouraged from communicating with each other - even about work. Management treats employees like children in terms of work hours. There is no flexibility. Even going out to lunch is discouraged. On food days, employees do not even eat together. You are expected to return to your desk and not talk to anyone. Thing happen here that you never see any where else. It is not uncommon for new employees or contractors to last less than a year. The environment is so bad it is a shock to most. Submissive people do better in the environment.
