Pros

Flexible Work Environment (FWE), where you can roughly set your own daily hours and even work from home as much as is practical for your current tasks. There are also still quite a few very talented and knowledgeable developers, particularly in the programming department, but those numbers are dwindling quickly under the current continued mismanagement by Deep Silver and Koch.

Cons

Currently Deep Silver and Koch are effectively running Volition into the ground, with much of our senior staff and most of our studio level management having either been laid off or resigned within the past few months, including numerous employees with 20+ years at Volition. There's still probably time to turn things around, but things really need to start improving soon, or there won't be much left of the heart and soul of this great studio.

Pros

Low cost of living, remote work available. Flexible work environment. Great culture among the content creators and lower management. Focus on diversity and welcoming atmosphere.

Cons

Always behind industry trends Chronic understaffing. Micromanagement. Poor leadership. Uncompetitive salary. Very few bonuses which are always small when they are given. Severe overdependence on outsourcing. Constant delays make games take forever to release which end up un-polished. Stagnant game design philosophy leads to non-competitive mediocre products. IP can never escape the shadow of other games that dominate the genre, but are given higher weight than the more unique IP's the studio has produced. Scheduling leads to burnout. Little room for employee skill growth.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback. Your point about hiring more senior people is well-taken, and we’ve already added some new studio-level hires who are really going to level up the studio and our capacity to focus on employee development. We're also continuing to add more resources for continuous, on-the-job training. We sincerely appreciate the review and wish you the best of luck wherever your career takes you.

Pros

Low cost of living. Saints Row is a popular series.

Cons

So many cooks wanting a say in creative decisions and management and keeps adding more, like it’s a corporate goal. Not enough people in UI, tech art, tech design, lighting. Volition insists on building their own tools like it’s 2002, but they have one tenth the team they need to support them, so the they’ve been falling behind for the last 5 or more years. Company will never ship a successful game that’s not Saints Row. Too many people involved to really be sharp and creative.

Thanks so much for the feedback. We have definitely taken this to heart, and have restructured things at a franchise and studio level to remove bureaucracy and ensure sure people are empowered by the tools and processes to keep making amazing games. We've also actively hiring in all the disciplines you mentioned, and have had some great senior hires come in recently. We very much appreciate hearing your thoughts and wish you the best at your new gig!

Thanks so much for the feedback. We've been working on creating more useful monthly company meetings so that the entire company feels they have insight and alignment with things happening at both the studio management level and the Embracer level. We'll keep trying to improve this; it'll be an ongoing process. Thanks for letting us know how it's going from your perspective!

Endless Potential

Pros

The atmosphere and culture is casual and largely everyone is open to collaboration. No idea is too silly and if you have the will, you are often empowered to find a way.

Cons

You aren't always given the resources necessary to complete tasks to the quality level matching the rest of the industry. Higher levels of management can be a bit opaque and the studio is often hamstrung by tight budgets, resulting in non-competitive perks compared to other game studios.

Pros

Us employees on the frontline (the content creators) were very supportive and worked together to solve problems and finish tasks on time for the milestones.

Cons

The studio leadership and management made poor decisions and major pivots that often cost the content team lots of lost time and lower quality.
