Pros

- You're not confined to an office cubicle - Building and maintaining relationships with grocery managers and store owners is very rewarding - Shoppers can be very appreciative of the work and time put into setting up displays, offering choice product, keeping product in stock and maintaining a clean and organized retail space throughout the store - Working for a company that is a leader in terms of wafers and NSA/SF cookies - Key account nation-wide promotions

Cons

There are several "cons" in which pertain to the job itself, and several in which pertain to working for this company. Job itself: - Receiving issues (working around receiving hours, dealing with malfunctions in computer managed inventory systems, waiting for transport trucks, change from DSD to Central, etc.) - Long travel times - Being a part of the retail industry (being subject to a "guarantee sales" philosophy, having allotted space replaced by better products, etc.) Company Issues: - The managers dance around many questions in which you poise, omitting information while not being upfront in their responses - Many managers portray a bad image. Many use fowl language when dealing with store personal, are unpleasant, smoke in front of the store, act like they run the store, are uneducated and correspond using emails that are so poorly written you need to read them twice to take something away from them - This company will take money from their distributors for anything and everything you can possibly think of

Thank you for your response and sharing your opinion. Voortman’s has a large distribution network of almost 500 distributors. We pride ourselves in hiring most managers from the DSD network itself as they understand the challenges through experience and have proven themselves successful. I am also not aware nor have we received complaints about foul language or smoking in undesignated areas but do take this seriously. It is important to note that communication and planning is key to the success of a distributor. Booking displays is where you “the distributor” make the bulk of your profit. I personally was a distributor and also had to deal with receiving hours and store managers. I built the relationships and an action plan with the help of my manager to create the competitive edge necessary to succeed in this industry. I see you are a current a distributor and encourage you to reach out to us at info@voortman.com with any concerns you have. We are here to help and do care very much about your success as without our distributors we would not be number one in North America in four cookie categories.

Pros

If you are a good route person, you can work at half effort and they will praise your sales increases and ability (my present situation). They have such poor route people that even at half effort I can beat most. Not bragging, just pointing out how low their standards are because they tend to not attract very good route people for the most part. I work no more then 20-25 hours a week as I do something else. Very good product.

Cons

Charge you for displays unlike any other route out there. Their meetings are hilarious. They claim to care about their Voortman family and say prayers at the meetings but they don't really care about you. Words are cheap. If they really cared and wanted to get good route people they would do something like pep. Farm does. Routes are bought and sold at different prices according to the area. So a area like South Carolina might be assigned a value of 15 times weekly sales while a area like New Jersey might be 30-40 times. Pep farm routes can be bought for just 10-15% down. When you are done you have something you can live with and obviously since the routes are worth real money you actually put effort into it, not like these part time Voortman routes. They cap everyone at 4 times! Then they would get full time route people who could really boost this company but it will never happen unfortunately. I will be out soon after building my route multiple times at half effort. It would have been interesting to know how much I could have got my route up to if they made it worthwhile.
