Pros

Office space, free things, all that jazz. Name recognition of the company.

Cons

This may seem highly editorial -- of course, it is -- but I did want to leave my feedback in case it could help somebody similar to me make a decision here. - Young people. If you're over 35-40 you stick out like a sore thumb, honestly. (Coming from a then-23-year-old.) Even at the executive level. That may be par for the course in digital media, but to me it's nearly ageism and sometimes it just felt downright silly working there. - Profitability. When I left, I think Vox Media *just* stopped losing money as a business. It's backed by hundreds of millions in funding, but it's not inspiring to work for a company running on borrowed cash. - Content. I didn't fully form these opinions before joining up, which is my mistake. Ultimately, I find Vox, the news site, a nearly toxic player in media -- as self-proclaimed "fair and balanced" as Fox News but just as biased. Verge provides unstimulating tech coverage with a clear fetish for Apple products. Polygon is often the butt of video game journalism jokes. And so forth. Acquiring Recode was the best thing Vox did for its reputation in journalism. The important takeaway there is to be sure that you enjoy the content they produce, so at least you'll have that to fall back on if your enjoyment in the people, the work, the industry, or whatever else begins to flag. Obviously, the content is also a good indication of the people who are attracted to the company - Leadership. At a mature company, processes might bend when the wind blows - like the departure of a team member, change in business priorities, etc. Here, most of them broke, and were rebuilt by folks who didn't understand the people, the day-to-day, etc. Even more senior leaders who could have provided support throughout that process appeared not to, which resulted in a lot of distress in the org. - Egos. There are always some kind people, but young folks with big personalities in senior roles and high compensation is not a great combination. And it can feel like a frat/sorority environment at times. Anyway, I had a negative experience here, but I'm leaving my review neutral to be mindful that the company may never have been a good fit to begin with. Good luck to you!

Pros

Vox has established such great brands and products over the years. People genuinely love the content and there is no better feeling than being able to contribute to a company that you believe in. - unlimited vacation: in theory it’s great! However, the company has been declining the allowance based on quarter and revenue as the company stands. Extremely unfair, especially when departments that are outside of sales are effected. - kitchen snacks: nice variety but gets old fast.

Cons

All of leadership and high level executives are foolish and far from knowledgeable. They basically have “kids” running the show and contributing to the consistent decline of Vox Media. Not only do these individuals make poor decisions with no evident support as to why, but they can’t even properly communicate the company’s goals and efforts to employees in a professional or clear way. Constant restructure leading to massive lay-offs of well equipped people. Extremely poor team cohesion. There is a horrible dark cloud of negativity surrounding the entire office - no one is happy, no one is encouraged, no one wants to be there. It truly is so sad what Vox Media has come to. Absolutely no room for advancement. Favoritism and politics are what determine your fate at Vox Media. Sadly the executives play dirty and will do whatever they can do win- at the expense of individuals who have been loyal and sacrificed a lot for the company. Lies, deceit, you name it, they do it. Do yourself a favor and avoid working here. It isn’t at all what it used to be, there are little to no benefits for a career here.

Pros

Decent benefits package, thanks to the union.

Cons

Vox management was made fully aware of someone deleting their coworker’s pitches from shared documents and still decided to promote them. This is who you are considering aligning yourself with and it’s not the same organization I agreed to work with years ago. It’s really quite sad. It does not take a private investigator to figure out revision history in google docs and the fact that said employee would have been completely invalidated without our interaction is so deeply sad and embarrassing for a company that boasts the importance of fairness and collaborating well. This is not a company that practices what they preach.
