Pros

Some incredibly talented, supportive colleagues. Once you know how to access District support services for things like tech repair, classroom support, on an individual basis, the staff are very responsive. Our cafeteria workers, janitors, office managers, painters, tech support people are knowledgeable and helpful.

Cons

Organization and management continue to mystify me. There is little transparency, coordination or real overall support for teachers, students or families. The goal seems to be to keep kids under control, not bother administration for behavioral issues and minimal complaints from parents or students. And if someone walks through a classroom, it should look nice and kids should look busy. MISSING: Shared vision and goals, collaboration, objectives for supporting whole child development, serious community outreach, transparency, caring about or valuing teachers, true student successs and an HR Dept. that serves employees—-all are mostly absent. Seems the goal of the district is to support its administrators who need a certain number of students and teachers to show up so they can keep their jobs.

Pros

Hourly pay better than some of the other school districts in Contra Costa County. Easy to find work. Right in the middle of East Bay, close to everything.

Cons

No benefits. They only give it to full-time employees. They make sure all instructional aides and other support staff work part time. They won't higher them for more than 6.5 hours, so they remain on part-time status. That way they can avoid paying benefits. Also, a lot of schools don't have enough staff. There's no quality staff training. They put people in very responsible positions to care for students with severe disabilities, yet they don't provide proper training for how to actually care for these vulnerable students. All they do is show videos on sexual harassment and how to deal with hazardous spills, that kind of thing.
