Pros

You’re surrounded by great people, who are extremely talented. (Unfortunately they are being led by managers who do not appreciate or value them.) Good PTO policy. Beautiful facility. The mission and values of PBS and WCNY are very appealing.

Cons

Management is the most abusive and toxic group of people. Those in the management positions got their jobs not because of experience or expertise, but by nepotism and poor leadership from the top. Instead of leading, managers boss the employees around, using fear tactics and threats of termination to ensure results. Extremely high turnover rate. People are fired, let go, and terminated every few weeks. Everyone works in fear for when they will be next on the chopping block. Many talented people quit to escape the toxic environment created by the senior leadership. Poor work/life balance. The numerous off-hour events that are mandatory for staff to attend or work means you are constantly working weekends and after hours. The lack of flexibility and inconsistent policy on flex time only builds the frustration staff feels about being forced to work these events.

Pros

At times, you are able to interact with inspiring people in the community

Cons

Criminal business practices - 99% of the nonprofit funds donated by well-meaning foundations, businesses, and individuals are squandered at best and spent on overpaid executives, the expensive building and needless employees creating marketing materials and spending entire days in meetings. A terrible, abusive culture where employees are encouraged to rat on each other, where managers aren't allowed or trusted to do their own jobs, where the current managers and many employees have no skills or prior experience doing their jobs, where the rug is pulled out on any plans made without notice and where there is no real community value provided whatsoever.

Pros

Great job to launch a career in. Some of the people that work there are fantastic, creative and know what they are doing but unfortunately they work at WCNY.

Cons

Where do I begin? Place is extremely unprofessional and I can not stress that enough. Bad management and organization within the whole broadcast industry. They never do performance reviews and aren't allowed to be creative or spend time on projects. All about a "get it done" mentality. Treated as a clubhouse than a company meaning they hire their friends in positions they shouldn't be in getting paid way too much. Slim growth within the company with a ton of work load with a very low salary. Care more about money than high quality work. They cut corners only to hurt themselves in the end. It is very hard to get your voice heard and have consistent quality work for local programming. There are a lot of lazy people there that are very consistent at not being able to shoot, edit and be familiar with the software and equipment the company has. This makes local programming stale and extremely uninteresting.
