Pros

- Advanced research published in top journals

Cons

- Mismanagement at all levels and disregard for culture has divided the entire institute and associated research groups into cliques, making daily work feel like you are navigating a middle school. Gossip, disrespect, and manipulation are acceptable ways of conduct. - There is no oversight of the individual professors associated with the institute. Their mismanagement and disregard for work environment is overlooked in return for high impact research papers. - Management only displays care for employees or willingness to solve issues if there are risks for repercussions, and only remain engaged until said risks has diminished. - Wyss Institute HR serves the management - not the employees. They are not there to help you. - No growth opportunities. They will intentionally stall any employee opportunities for as long as they can. - Poor compensation, excused by association with the Harvard brand and benefits package.

Pros

Devices at Wyss Institute are amazing, researching here you get insight to latest bioinspired technology and techniques. This institute is hard working, efficient and is always producing state of the art technology that will be beneficial in various areas of infrastructure and medical technology. If you are interested in becoming a biomedical or biochemical engineer this is definitely the place for you and will give you great ideas in developing your own technology and devices.

Cons

Scientist was not easy to work with, didn't learn as much as I thought I would. I had to teach myself about the device I was working on because the scientist was cocky, lazy and ignorant to my opinion and understanding of the device I was working on which was still pretty good. Lab settings and staff vary everywhere even at one of the world's top research institutes, maybe this was just my experience with the scientist I worked with.

Pros

Abundant and well-organized lab resources. Excellent engineering resources. Overall friendly and collaborative environment. Talented PR/advertising department will present your work and the Wyss Institute in a very positive light to the general public.

Cons

A lot of the research (especially in the bigger Wyss labs) boils down to repetitively testing drugs/therapeutics instead of making groundbreaking fundamental discoveries that have the potential to transform translational science. Even though many of the core faculty (PIs) are highly talented, the staff scientists tend to be more focused on managerial tasks than scientific innovation. Typically, research associates, PhD students, and postdocs do not aspire to be staff scientists at the Wyss Institute because they hope to land better/more respectable positions elsewhere.
