Pros

The people (except the management) are really nice. There is a selection of fine watering holes near by (trust me you will appreciate them working here) There is a KFC downstairs although its too busy so Sainsburys will have to do!

Cons

Where to start.... For context this company has always had employee retention issues, and a fairly dictatorial mentality. You also know there is a problem when more people turn up to the owners retirement party than they do the company Christmas Party (more to follow on that shambles) The owner recently retired much to the joyful hopes of almost everyone in the business, he is inappropriate, rude and just outright aggressive and condescending to everyone and anyone he feels deserves the wrath of his draconian tongue. The problem is that there are two owners left, whom, both share equal if not more oppressive and dictatorial views than the owner, the CEO is the daughter of the owner and while on the outside seems nice and credible, she is a gaslighting sociopath. While the company has always had a revolving door of talent - fresh and really good people never stay long, since the change of management those numbers have only increased - I have seen at least half a dozen if not more people leave this year already, ranging from HR, Sales, Accounts and Support, that is almost every department - absolutely shocking! In my opinion the CEO is too young and inexperienced to be leading a company of this size, there is no credible track record of leading a team or organisation. I find it insulting that someone almost my age can run a business so poorly just because her father owns the business (I genuinely do not know who is/was the worst leader out of them both). Management seem to be involved in almost every aspect of the business which leads me on to the Micro management, you are expected to over work and be under paid (Quite literally colleagues have not been paid correctly) and recently it transpired others across the business haven't been paid correctly - some apparently for months on end, having to chase - absolutely disgusting behaviour, it's either incompetence or just pure ignorance I lean towards the later given how old the company is! This unreasonable expectation and treatment of employees is nothing new either. I have often worked over-time and the pay is wrong or incorrect, recently I refused to work extra hours and have was told it could reflect badly on my opportunities in the business, I would worry about that if there were any opportunities to begin with. People are promoted just to keep them because the company struggles to keep staff. And this means the wrong people are promoted, we have a couple of amazing team leads but their are a lot of inexperienced people in management roles. Our team lead is left un-empowered and reports into quite possibly the most self cantered, self obsessed and narcissistic person I have had the misfortune of having to work for. He is a bully, talks down to people openly in the office and on more than one occasion has been caught out running people down on conference calls in the office, he, like all the other managers put themselves up high (quite literally) in a glass fish bowl. However the irony isn't lost on some of us that while the management look down and out from their glass watch tower we look up at them like they are sharks in captivity, swimming around looking for their next unfortunate person to devour and spit out. This year has seen more people come and go within a matter of months of joining that the old owner has come out of hibernation much to the upset of everyone around me and come back to the business full time! Something that many of us had already placed bets on would be the case anyway - it's not the first time he has tried retiring. I cannot wait to leave - only last week did another team leader leave, I like many are so miserable and unhappy I genuinely feel sick of the thought of going to work on a Monday, it's upsetting to the point I have seriously considered just doing anything else until I find another job in IT. It should not be this way and it is saddening as so many lovely people are just treated like a another number.

Hi, I wanted to take the time to respond to this message directly. I am very sorry you feel this way about your experience at Wanstor. Wanstor is extremely fast-paced, and we are demanding of the high standards that our customers deserve. Some people thrive in this environment and others don't. We have made lots of changes over the last couple of years and there are more that me and rest of the leadership team are keen to make. Change takes time and it's not for everyone. We have recently achieved a best companies award of 'One to Watch' as a result of a thorough company-wide employee survey. There's lots more to do but were are working hard to make Wanstor a great place to work. Regarding your comments about me personally; it is a privilege to lead this company and though I am only a few months into the role, I am supported by a fantastic leadership team who bring decades of experience from within Wanstor and beyond. I bring my own experience working across FTSE 100 organisations in a variety of sectors, leading at Wanstor for the past 4 years, and a fresh perspective to our business, customers, and culture. Wanstor is more than just a business to me and as we grow I will always be striving to create an environment where our people, our customers and our business win together. There will be a lot of learning, some mistakes and lots of humility. It is not an easy job and your comments are hurtful. I do not know which interactions have prompted your comments around 'gaslighting', but my assumption is that if you are feeling the way you do about Wanstor when I share news about some of the wins and successes, including the best companies achievement, that may feel disgenuine. I am in a priviledged position to have context and feel it is my duty to share these successes to continue to motivate our teams, however I will be more thoughtful about the way in which I do this in future. The joys of working for Wanstor.

This review was originally posted on May 23, 2017, but was inadvertently archived by the author. Reposted with a few edits and formatted. The colleagues I worked with were great: friendly, very helpful and highly knowledgeable. They were however overworked, under-appreciated and treated like an object that can be pushed around. Some of the people I worked with very extremely talented and happy to share their knowledge with others. It is clear that the people were the reason why others worked there. If you were to ask anyone, that’s perhaps the first reason they’d give. Other positives include an all-around exposure to technology within the Microsoft stack. If you want to learn and are prepared to write the documentation and do the research, there was scope to learn, but there was no structured learning or incentive to learn within the Wanstor environment. Moreover, Wanstor were very good at sucking up all your time, for example by putting you on shift without giving adequate notice. The company did not appreciate extended learning or training! Nor gave staff the adequate time to do it. Other positives include their commitment to give just the legally minimum required holidays. Management are very keen to pull you over for lateness or a few sick days. A lengthy 6 months’ probation period is also mandatory – of course as it takes them that long to decide if they want to keep you and if they are not happy, they can always let you go a week before the 6 months is up! One will be pleased to know other positives include a management who do not speak to you. Their lofty ideas of keeping you part of the company is a distant memory. There were days when they gave us updates, but I am sure they are super busy right now, so they don’t bother with the engineers – freeing up our time to do other work, like trying to re-arrange appointments or child care as they did not let us know they have changed our shifts – again! Since management does not speak to you, you also get very little feedback. How good is that? You now will never know if you are working well, on target or off-the-mark, until they choose to fire you and then they might let you know. Hey, at least the management does not bother you – that’s a positive right? What else, oh yea, you won’t be under any pressure to perform well, as they do not appreciate your work and give you pay raises or promotions. Your yearly one-to-one will be rushed and haphazard. At the end, the paper you signed will be worthless until next year. So the take-away is no need to even hope for a negative or positive outcome from the meeting, so no need to push yourself. What else do you ask? You will be pleased to know they pay below industry standard when you check around for the going rate, so hey, at least you have a job right? Right?! They do give you water and tea/coffee area is available. You have the joy of being able to share one cubical for the boys (with over 120 employees – as the MD is keen to point out here). The smell, well if you manage to catch it and bottle it, you could sell it at an avant-garde store and make some serious money. Ohhhh, you get below inflation pay raises, and some do not even get one. What is the positive in that I hear you ask? Well.. at least you have a job right? Don’t worry, you also will not have to worry about managing any of the extra benefits – having to go though some portal to see if you have anything of interest you could take advantage of – as the company have decided again and again not to burden their employees with any. In case you are wondering this: yes, they do monitor you the minutes you work – that is when exactly you swipe in and swipe out. You will be told it is some data protection and ISO stuff, but be assured, it is so they can say, ‘hey, I guess you had to leave early by 2 minutes the other day, family emergency? Going somewhere nice!’ See, they do care! If you like it hot in the office, this is the place to be! I mean hot! In the summer! Then again if you like it cold, then make sure to work the graveyard shift, where they turn off all the heating, and you are allowed to wear a hat, coat and gloves. Other positives include, walls, carpets, doors, they let you look out of a window too.

Cons

Now the negatives. I am sure you are jumping for joy after reading the above positives. I hope the list below will not disappoint. Please allow me to make a few observations before I begin: you will see a flurry of new ‘positive’ comments for this company within a small time frame. The company has requested their employees and senior management to review them positively – just like they did for Google review. I only can hope money changed hands! Wanstor emails around asking their staff to review them and even went around with a tick list making sure some did! Wanstor have tried to repudiate some of the comments here as they go on a mission to justify themselves, like saying things like “hoping to review their employees anonymously” – see below comments. The management is socking! They treat whom they like with lot of esteem and those they do not like with contempt. The staff turnover is high – why? Well, partly because they fire people indiscriminately, like when people are sick or when they want to study part time or when they say they cannot work weekends or when questioning why they had not been paid properly for overtime. Wanstor were recently taken to court and were found guilty on all counts for unfairly firing one of their employees ; they neither followed their own procedures or minimum ACAS rules and acted very badly and aggressively. May I encourage you to do a Google search for the tribunal. It is an eye opener, especially to see how the MD treats the employees there. Secondly, staff are undervalued and underpaid. So people often left. They lost a lot of talent because of it. There is hardly any prospect of promotion - you are stuck at your job. Remind me of the good ol’ 60s, where you had a job ‘for life’. If they liked you, they paid you back by sending you to all kinds of places in and out of London with 5 minutes’ notice – literally! Oh you also get asked to do night shifts because they choose not to employ enough night staff to cover (until recently, they literally had one person man the whole office from 10PM till 8AM. Imagine the consequences of an accident!) Thirdly, they are good at not sorting out visas for those who are on working visa, so, lo’ behold, one day you are working the next day Wanstor forgot to renew your visa – despite many reminders – and then you have to pack up and leave the country you have been working in for years! You get the picture. The HR is shocking! If you want a HR who knows their HR ‘stuff’, don’t put your hope in this HR. They have no clue! This is including HR procedures, how to book holidays, how not to book someone else’s holiday against you, how to speak to someone who is unwell… oh don’t even ask them legal questions either. They don’t know anything in terms of HR laws and regulations. I do give them credit to knowing how never take on board what people say on their exit interviews. They have a rule that it is a sack-able offence if you talk about one’s wages! You read that right! Because they pay people so badly, they want you to know it a sack-able offence if you share with your friends what you might be earning with your hard working hours you put in. This not only creates division but suspicions. They have artificially created a culture of distrust within the staff. If you have a family, may I encourage you not to consider this place. Unless you do not want to see them or have no semblance of work-life balance or consistency in seeing them. And then hope your kids or partner never gets ill! If you were to call in sick/or with sick dependants, HR will make you – that’s right, you- feel guilty! They will want you to call in at 9AM. Most of the time HR was not in at 9AM. Some who worked on shifts or at client’s started at 8:30/8:00, so if you were sick, they had no structure in place to call in till 9AM, but you were a ‘no-show’ at the client’s – as it was the HR’s responsibility to call them. Number of times, if you were at a client’s office, they did not send an engineer to replace you for the day, and guess who was made to feel guilty they were not able to, due to the lack of time to organise this?! I hear you ask, how does one get a pay raise? Well, does the management like you – yes? Then they give it to you, not inflation busting of course (so really you are earning less this year than last year due to inflation and cost going up). No? Good luck, try again next year. The pot is: we like employee A, B and C – so they get a pay raise. We do not like X, Y and Z – nein mein feuer! I can assuredly tell you this because they send you a letter well before your annual pay review that you had a raise or no. So, the review is pointless as there is no incentive or even opportunity to talk about it. If you bring up pay at your review, you will be told they can’t talk about it and that they will need to speak to MD directly about it. Lo and behold, guess who has to like you? Yep, you guessed it! The annual review was a waste of time. The meetings were rushed and totally haphazard. You go through a check list that was never reviewed again, including any targets that were set. So the targets were pointless. Even if you said for example that you want to do exams, no time was given for study, or if you said, you want to learn so and so, again no time was given. So what was the point of targets? Then the paperwork was signed and folder was closed and next year a new page was opened ad infinitum. May I be as bold as to encourage the management and HR to look up the SMART model for performance objectives? (Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Realistic and Timed). There was no perks at all. You literally got paid and that’s all for the company. Though to be fair, now and then on a Friday there was a BBQ and sugary treats. However, nothing structured or long term – such as medical insurance; extra holidays (than the 20 they give); buying computer hardware on a tax free scheme… I appreciate they are not bound to, and after all it is that – an incentive, but it is not only an investment on the staff, but a way to show appreciation. There are Christmas parties, but note that recently we went to one, where our Yorkshire puddings were cut up in half – so you only got half. Budgetary reason dare I say! You were forced to log time of 450 minutes per day against tickets. You had to reach your quota of 450 minutes a day! That is 7.5hrs multiplied 60 minutes. That means they demand that every minute of your day, bar the hour lunch has to be accounted for against your tickets you are working on. No time was to be taken for a break, coffee, bathroom, talking to colleagues, meetings, research with your team, meeting HR, sorting out HR’s mistakes, advising HR’s mess up on your calendar…. Every minute had to be accounted for. Is this achievable? No. Is this however demanded? Yes! This leads to people over logging time (no fault of the staff but due to pressure from above)– perhaps even be tempted to over exaggerate their work. However, the management are happy and overlook that staff are not being totally honest, like taking 1 hour to reset a password in AD, as long as they can bill the company in question. Does it really take 6 minutes to pick an email from the mailbox and click ‘attach’ so the email binds to the ticket? Money ! Money! Money! Oh, did you want training? Is that a reason for looking at this company. Blood, stone… you know the old adage. Not happening. Sure, no company is perfect. We all know that. No person is perfect too. Having working there for a number of years, having spoken to a number of employees and ex-employees, rest assured, this is a common feeling. If you have any question, please ask. I’d like to assure you that despite your distrust, we do take employee feedback very seriously and are committed to constantly improving the working environment at Wanstor, so that we can ensure that none of our current or future employees feel the same as you did. As per your comments, our teams here are fantastic; as the company continues to grow each year we have managed to internally promote more staff, and our management team are continually looking at improvements we can make for them. For example, we have increased everyone’s holiday allowance by 5 days, introduced regular competitions, meals out and events, and our football team has just won the league. We are now introducing a more structured employee experience strategy that will formalise these improvements, with a particular focus on learning & development, recognition, and ensuring our employees feedback and opinions are heard. Our staff have always and continue to play a big part of the continual improvements we make. Wanstor pays above average for the industry, we do this to recruit and retain good staff. Progression in the company (and higher pay) is connected to the person’s ability and attitude. There are training programs with the Service Desk Institute in the office most months, lunch and learn sessions, online training and more, but these do require engagement and proactivity from our staff. Regarding annual reviews, I’m sorry that you didn’t feel these were worth your time. When conducting reviews we do in fact ensure the objectives are SMART, and encourage our staff to take as much ownership of their objectives as their managers. This is after all your future and career. That being said, we are placing increased importance on ensuring that all of our employees are receiving regular attention from their managers in the form of frequent 1-to-1s and informal catch ups. As a service company our customers are billed for work completed, as such it’s important for staff to log time against different clients. This is normal in many industries and essential to provide accurate billing. I hope you find somewhere that you’re more happy with in the future.

- Toxic work environment, very much a us VS them mentality with the Senior Leadership (Except for CTO) talking down to everyone, verbally unpleasant always - Promise the world when you join, but under deliver. If they were honest from the start then people wouldn't keep leaving - Presenteeism in the office; office is silent always, cannot really be yourself. Forced to come in for 'team work' but unable to even talk to your team without feeling uncomfortable - Attrition rate is VERY high - not just on SD, across the business - Socials are forced fun, seen to reflect badly on you if you don't attend (often not paid for by the company, so at your own expense) - Best Companies thing is a paid thing - do not believe that this company is a best company to work for because it is definitely not - Poor benefits (low pension contribution, low holiday at 22 days standard) - If you voice your concerns, you will be told that it's a you thing rather than any issue with the company - 80% of people you speak to are unhappy here, fed up and either are leaving or want to
