Pros

Benefits are better than average. The pay is below average and is terrible for staff positions. It can be a nice small town to raise your family. The students range from inspired to clueless. Your colleagues will depend on the department and school. Beautiful campus. You will need to create and pay for your own professional development opportunities. You might get reimbursed for travel or supplies if you have a good relationship with your department head or dean. There is a great deal of service work and advising that is required. If you enjoy teaching and working with students this could be a great place to start your career.

Cons

The college has had issues keeping faculty and staff. The administration doesn't seem to communicate with all faculty or staff on a regular basis. There is a palatable town gown divide that can be felt at certain businesses and with landlords. Work life balance is mentioned as a concept but doesn't seem to be supported by college policies. Many of my colleagues have too many students or advisees. Student services seems understaffed but this could be due to the pandemic. Some staff members are treated badly by their supervisors. The leader of one of the areas says terrible things about their employees to other staff. It doesn't seem legal. It is disconcerting. The college is always searching for more workers in this area. There seems to be rancor in some areas of the college about past deeds of the administration. It's a theme across campus and brings down morale. Budgets for departments are low across the aboard and everything is on a 2 year budget plan? It makes it difficult to plan for replacement equipment or purchases. I've seen colleagues struggle to get basics to run their programs. Some professors, staff and students are conservative. If you are liberal, you may need to re-calibrate your language to be successful with students. The area is rural and remote. Be prepared to drive two hours for more varied foodstuffs. If you are single, this might not be the place for you unless you enjoy long distance relationships.
