Horrible place to work

Pros

The camaraderie on shifts was pretty good. Aside from that I don't have any pros to share.

Cons

Mandatory over time - doesn't matter what your plans are. Unless you are one of the favorites, in which case, they might let you off the hook, then drop the overtime on someone else, even if that person already has 1 or 2 days of overtime. Supervisors - even the good supervisors are not good. Many of them are very corrupt and make a lot of unethical decisions. And the "good" Sergeants will just tuck their heads in the sand and not do or say anything because they don't want to rock the boat. At any level of command, they will not step up and "do the right thing" because anyone who rocks the boat forfeits any future promotions. I was there for 8.5 years. Many Sergeants are highly unethical, sometimes borderline criminal, and many of them very sexist. I lost track of how many times I was told "you're a woman", "it's not safe because you're a woman", or "let the men handle it". Any complaints turn into you being insubordinate. Supervisors and Deputies alike will lie to get ahead, and such behavior is highly rewarded. If you are not an a** kisser or part of the "good ole boys club" then don't expect to have a future there. And that good ole boys club will change occasionally. If one day they decide they don't like you, they will go out of their way to make you fall, lose collaterals, etc. Sergeants will threaten people all day long about not making mistakes in briefing, tell you that if you need help they are here for you and just call, but then they will hide in their office watching football telling you to "figure it out yourself" when you call for help. The turnover is insane, and for good reason. So many people get in there, see the BS then dip as fast as possible. This place was absolutely horrible and has gone as far as to destroy many people's mental health because of how abusive and toxic the work environment is. And the higher up the chain of command you go the more absent they become. They are more interested in their long term political careers, than they are in supporting their line staff. Sheriff Reams does not care one bit about the jail, provides no support, and uses the jail as discipline when patrol deputies get in trouble. Which goes to show how much of a positive attitude he has about the jail...and that attitude trickles down. There is a Sergeant on staff who was convicted of child abuse, was put on leave to serve his sentence, then brought right back, still as a supervisor. They have no issue accepting corruption, while demeaning and belittle line staff for simple mistakes.

Pros

Decent pay and experience and there are good deputies and supervisors that work there. Got my POST and found a better agency to work for.

Cons

Worked as a deputy for two years and the worst place I’ve ever worked. Most supervisors are garbage and micromanage you. They do not care about you or your family life and if they don’t like you for any reason they will find a way to get rid of you. They are very unorganized and schedules are inconsistent. Forced overtime and benefits are terrible. Their hiring process is easy for a reason, they hire anyone to fill spots and can get rid of you just as fast. Lots of cliques make it feel like it’s middle school and not a lot of camaraderie. If you want to go from detentions to patrol good luck. POST is part time and they will not pay or reimburse you for it. This agency plays favorites and do not recognize you for working hard only the mistakes you make. Lots of people are quitting and it’s for a reason. Please look at other agencies that will pay just as good if not better and will recognize you for the work you do.

Pros

-Competitive base pay -Employee Health Clinic -Wellness Program -Supportive upper command staff

Cons

-Staff are treated poorly and are frequently told about "Work/Life Balance" but are mandated to work overtime weekly. No OT pay unless a certain amount of hours in a pay period are met (Federal minimum). -Poor direct level supervision -Toxic staff and supervisors -A culture of backstabbing to get ahead -Encourages employees to turn on each other (and are rewarded for doing so) -Lack of ethics from supervision and staff -Dishonest supervisors -Borderline criminal activity observed frequently
