Does NOT understand diversity

Pros

They have a cafeteria and no set work schedule.

Cons

I don’t understand how promotions work here or how jobs get filled. Why does HR insist on filling positions by hiring externally when there are so many young people working here who have been out of college for 1-5 years? I work alongside many brilliant young people, many of whom are temporary hires working on a project contract basis and once the project ends they are stuck in limbo waiting for work. The same can be said for salaried people. There is typically not a lot of available work for them to do so to make up for that and through no fault of their own, they take 8 hours to complete tasks that should normally take 2-3 hours. The part that is most disturbing is that for the most part they are minorities. Promotions rarely go to them because favoritism is rampant at Westat. People of color tend to stay in entry level positions here and once they realize that they’ve reached their full potential, they leave. I don’t blame them. How can a company that prides itself in being “diverse” be proud that a majority of its employees who are people of color stay in entry level positions for their entire tenure until they find a better job? Westat is regressing into an 80’s style upper management model where the executive leadership is comprised of middle aged white men and white women. You can’t equate gender diversity and racial diversity. They are truly NOT the same thing. You shouldn’t brag about being a majority women owned company when it’s mostly white women who make up that statistic.

Good Place for Some and Not So Good for Others...

Pros

Flexible schedules, work at home (for some staff), very casual work atmosphere, no dress code

Cons

Management is either unwilling of lacking in experience to get involved and lead employees effectively, administrative staff seen as dumb or inexperienced when all of them have more experience than the research assistants who are hired straight out of undergrad and don't have a clue, but end up doing a lot of clerical work (taking meeting minutes, scheduling meetings, and formatting Word documents and creating PowerPoint slides). If you want to spend money on a degree or advanced degree only to come to work and do entry level clerical duties then this place is for you. Also, the company is VERY TOP HEAVY and most junior staff end up leaving at about the 3 year mark when they see advancement is virtually non-existent. This is a good place to work if you just want a job and have no ambition or care about advancing your career. It is very easy to get complacent and comfortable as the work is not hard...then next thing you know 5 years has went by and you are doing the same thing with little to no chance of upward mobility. The health insurance employee monthly premiums are VERY expensive. You get SIX (6) holidays. Be prepared to work the day after Thanksgiving and no early closings the day before a holiday and no early closings or closings for inclement weather.

Pros

Free lunch and dinner about 10 times per year, if you would like to work during your lunch or stay at a company event until 9pm.

Cons

Backstabbing, falsifying reviews to the company's agenda, does not handle workplace discrimination, injuries or harassment well. Once one of these things happen, they try to diminish and dehumanize you as much as possible in order to justify firing you. Numerous law suits have been filed against the company by its employees, yet the company keeps on denying, denying, denying.
