Pros

Made lifelong friends. No other pros

Cons

Where do I start! Worked up to Supervisor, worked in cash office and as duty manager. Then the redundancies happened and suddenly all what I had learned was taken away from me. Was offered a new role as a cashier, but they wanted me to at still train the new supervisors, oh and now I was on a lower pay rate. They want you to be fully flexible. I worked every weekend, so if you want family time, forget it as the company must always come first. you are just a number, i was only part time but regularly worked over 30 hour weeks, which is great if you want that, but i didnt, and when they've slogged you to the bone so much you decide to leave. There was no thank you at all for your 14 year service there with minimum sickness. When I requested a reference from them for my new job, all it said was I worked there from ..... Nothing about my progression with the company, nothing about my few days sickness in fourteen years. Morale is rock bottom. No Christmas party or gifts etc which may seem petty but it just shows how little value you are to them.

Pros

Having this job is marginally better than being unemployed. That is truly the only good thing I can say about working for this company. Plus most of my colleagues are nice enough people.

Cons

If you complain about them on social media, you will be dismissed. A former colleague said he had a rubbish day at work, didn't even say it was the company's fault, but they sacked him. You can not talk ill of customers either, no matter how stupid or evil they may be. That includes the woman who flung some human waste under some shelves. The managers show insane amounts of favouritism to their friends, and let them get away with murder, whereas the rest of us tiptoe around, always on thin ice. The music is just drivel, the pre-recorded P.A. announcements are done in extremely patronising voices, treating our customers like a bunch of children and/or idiots. If you mention that the speakers are too loud, customers are complaining as well, if you say this, they turn the speakers up. The toilet where I work stinks of stale urine, all our toilets are broken, the urinal backs up into the sinks, and one cubicle has a broken seat, the other a broken flush, which sometimes leaks. Someone keeps urinating behind one of the toilets, then you get to stand in it. The manager is not addressing this, because he does not want to. He was just off sick, yet found time to get professional photos taken of his family. He posted them on social media, which his bosses will see, but he will not lose his job, as I would do if it were me. When they are meant to having meetings with you, they keep on putting them off, even if you suffer with stress-related ailments, where being forced to wait will have a negative impact. I, and some others have cut down hours, due to stress. Someone has taken an employment break. People moan to each other about how terrible a time they are having, we have mostly given up on speaking to the manager. The friends of the management can decide when they are doing overtime, even if it means someone else has to slow down, in order to have enough work until the end of their shift. The Christmas stock starts going out in June or July, before the Hallowe'en stock, which doesn't start going out until October. Christmas music starts on the 1st of November, which is far too early. If lucky we get two days off for Christmas, depending on what day of the week it falls on. Our speakers are so loud, they are scaring away our customers. I often trip over tumbleweed when taking delivery up to the shop floor. Anyone who is smart enough to think for themselves is considered an enemy, and treated like dirt. When people leave, they get healthier and happier, and I cannot wait until I leave. I currently fight off panic attacks and dizzy spells on a weekly basis. I stopped getting dizzy spells in school, but things have been so bad the last few years, they started up again. I had a panic attack on my train home the other day, which some dumb blonde thought was me perving over her legs. I never even noticed her legs. I was filming myself having the panic attack, so I could complain to GWR about their service, and the effect it has on some people. When I was accused of filming the woman's legs. A man leant in and gave me grief, I was so wound up from work, that I lashed out at him with an insane amount swearing and I very nearly belted him one. I am so stressed out that I am up until 2am, and have to fight to get up out of bed, sometimes I feel like just staying in bed. If you are sick, you have to phone in EVERY day, unless you are in a coma, it has to be you to phone up, nobody else can do it for you, no matter how ill you are. If not, you will get the sack. Unless you are a friend of management, then you can just phone up when you are feeling like you will go back the next day. Otherwise EVERY day, at least an hour before you start work. So that you take longer to make a full recovery. If you are not a friend, they will give you grief for not going in, even if you are recovering from surgery. This happened to me, I needed 7 to 10 days to recover, but was expected back the following day. Each time I phoned in, the manager hassled me, until I went back after just 4 days rest. Which could have opened wounds up and exasperated things to boot. This is all depending on the particular store and manager mind, some are better than this, some listen to what you have to say. I was told to match my colleagues speed, I put getting the job done safely and making things easier for others, thus saving time in the long-run ahead of speed, I was told I had to match his speed BUT to maintain my high standards, he was not told to match my high standards. I am somewhat handicapped as well, but the fact I do not have a walking stick apparently means I should be able to match his speed. I suffer a number of afflictions, which can slow me down, yet I am meant to "grit my teeth" and work through it. I am told if I cannot do my job, he can always put me on tills instead. Which would actually be worse for my particular problems. I am currently dizzy worrying about going to work tomorrow. I only feel fit and healthy on holiday, but even then the last day or so I am fighting the urge to vomit everywhere. Health and safety is an absolute joke. "Yeah, I'll fill out a form later." is a regular occurrence. You find out later on that they have not filled out a form.

Pros

20% discount. Up to 30 days holiday plus bank holidays

Cons

They no longer care about their employees, you are just a number. I was bullied out of the company from a psychopathic manager. Don't expect HR to help, they don't care. I worked for wilko for over 10 years, for the past couple of years, I was made to feel complete and utterly worthless. Wilko has become heartless, there was a time when they really cared about their staff. Not anymore. If you value your mental health, stay away from this company !
