Pros

Generous operating budget and solid endowment make it a secure place to work. The people of nice.

Cons

Very conservative leadership that does not like to take any risk. The administration seems to be focused on preserving the endowment over everything else. Very closed community.

Pros

Secure organization. Great work-life balance in most departments. Excellent benefits. Great human resources, so you like your coworkers.

Cons

Pay is dismal compared to peer schools in more suburban/ urban areas, which negatively affects employee morale. Location is rural and isolated.

Pros

Intelligent co-workers, students keep you young, nice area of the country, good benefits (especially for administrative staff or you have lots of kids going to college), accommodating if you need time off, summers are quiet.

Cons

This employer's industry is education, yet, if you want to take classes to get a degree, they won't pay for it. They will only pay for classes if they directly involve your job. And then, only if the classes are at night so you don't miss work. (Although, I know some people who HAVE had their bachelor degrees paid for, but they are administrative staff.) There is no such thing as a MERIT raise--it doesn't matter how hard you work, how great your work ethic is. I see people who have a wonderful work ethic passed over for raises while people whose work ethic is poor get raises. It's who you know, not what you do. Forget it if you think working hard, being smart, and giving 110% will get you a promotion--it won't!
